Gibson, SHU eke out win over Bryant

Box Score

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Bryant University men's basketball team held Sacred Heart to just a single basket over a 4:22 span to cut the deficit to just three points with 5:40 left to play, and the Bulldogs had the ball facing a three-point gap with 13 seconds remaining, but the visitors would fall heartbreakingly short in the opening game of NEC Rivalry Week, 79-77, Wednesday night at the Pitt Center.

Sacred Heart's Shane Gibson paced both sides with 30 points off 10-of-16 shooting and five 3-pointers to pace three Pioneers (12-14, 6-7 Northeast Conference) to record double figures, while junior guard Raphael Jordan (Bel Air, Md.) led the Bulldogs (2-23, 1-12) with 18 points and four assists. Junior point guard Frankie Dobbs (Berea, Ohio) chipped in 18 points and pulled in a game-best seven rebounds while dishing out five helpers, and sophomore Alex Francis (Harlem, N.Y.) added 16 points with a game-high four steals.

Bryant began to chip away at Sacred Heart's 13-point second-half lead with 12:35 still to play in the stanza, quickly cutting the home side's lead to seven, 55-48, nearing the midway point of the frame thanks to an Erick Smith (Bel Air, Md.) triple.

Two free throws from Stan Dulaire put the Pioneer advantage back at nine only seconds later, but from there, Bryant would limit its host to just a Louis Montes layup over the next four-plus minutes, getting seven points from Francis and another Smith trifecta to pull within a single tally, 59-58, with just under six minutes still on the clock.

But Sacred Heart would rebound, finding itself with a less comfortable seven-point edge with 2:45 remaining, and the Pioneers would extend their margin to eight on a pair of Gibson freebies with 2:10 to play.

Consecutive threes from Dan Calandrillo (Leonardo, N.J.) and Jordan narrowed the gap to two, 74-72, as the clock ticked under the one-minute mark, and the teams traded layups to bring the clock down to just 13 seconds.

A Dobbs foul sent Evan Kelley to the line for two, and when the sophomore made just the back end, the Bulldogs reclaimed the ball within a score with the chance to tie it up. And while Dobbs came down the court and got a good look from beyond the arc at the top of the key, the shot fell short, leaving just four seconds left on the clock.

Bryant was forced to foul, and Gibson made both at the line for a five-point edge. Dobbs put up a long three as the clock expired – a shot that went clean through the net – but the shot could only cut it to two as the Bulldogs fell, 79-77.

And while the Black and Gold were hot in the second half, outscoring Sacred Heart, 51-40, in the frame, it took the team more than four minutes to get on the board at the game's outset, and Bryant started its scoring already in a 6-0 hole. The Pioneers would double that gap by the 11-minute mark, 16-7, with a layup from Phil Gaetano. It was the first Sacred Heart basket scored by a player other than Gibson or Justin Swidowski (15 points).

The Pioneers would up their lead to as many as 13 points, 24-11, with 7:38 to play in the first before the Bulldogs' first 3-pointer of the day – a triple from Dobbs in the corner – was followed by back-to-back defensive stops to allow a trifecta from Jordan and a breakaway layup from Francis, cutting the hosts' lead to just five, 24-19.

But missed shots would hamper the Bulldogs for the rest of the opening session, as Sacred Heart outscored its visitor, 15-7, to take a 39-26 advantage into the halftime break.

The Pioneers held Francis, Bryant's leading scorer, to just five points in the half, but couldn't keep him at bay in the second (12 points). The Bulldogs shot 50 percent in the second stanza to finish the game at a 46.7 percent clip, while the Pioneers shot an impressive 60.4 percent on the day. Bryant went 10-of-22 from long distance (45.5 percent) to Sacred Heart's 8-of-18 mark (44.4), and the Bulldogs won the rebounding battle, 30-26, including 14 offensive boards (19 second-chance points).

The Bulldogs won't have to wait long to get another crack at the Pioneers, as Sacred Heart makes the return trip to Smithfield, R.I., Saturday for a 1 p.m. matchup that will wrap up 2012 NEC Rivalry Week.
