NEW YORK – Sophomore
middle hitter Maria Scocca of Melrose, Mass. had a
career-high 23 kills but it was not enough as the Bryant University
women's volleyball team dropped a 3-2 decision at Columbia in
first day action of the 2009 Columbia Classic.
The Bulldogs will close out the Columbia
Classic Saturday with a 2:30 pm match against Lehigh followed by a
5 pm match with Fairleigh Dickinson.
Bryant (2-8) dropped the first two sets of the
match as Columbia raced out in front, 25-18,
25-23. But behind the play of Scocca, the
Bulldogs rallied, winning the third 25-21 and pulling out a
thrilling 26-24 win in the fourth to force a deciding set.
Tied at 24-24 in the fourth, Scocca pushed the
Bulldogs to set point with a kill and put the
game away by teaming with Macy Mitravich with a
block on the Lions' Megan Gaughn, the Ivy League's top
offensive weapon.
Scocca's previous best was 21 kills set
last year against Dartmouth. Against Columbia,
she hit 47.4 percent to go with three blocks and two aces.
In the fifth, Columbia (5-4) raced out quickly
in front 4-0, but the Bulldogs again made another run at the Lions
as a Jazmin Stoner kill pulled Bryant to within
13-11. But Gaughn put away two more kills to
close out the match.
Stoner had a career night as well as the
sophomore from Durango, Colorado notched posted a career-best 21
kills to go with 11 digs and pair of service aces.
Libero Robyn Gardner had 25
digs.
