SMITHFIELD, RI - The second-seeded Bryant University women's
soccer team saw its season come to an end Sunday afternoon with a
3-0 loss to third-seeded Franklin Pierce in the second round of
NCAA New England Regional action.
The host Bulldogs outshot the Ravens, 10-9, but sent just five
of those on goal. Franklin Pierce found the target in all nine
chances, making good on three of them. But it was Bryant's 11
fouls (to Franklin Pierce's 12) that were most costly for the
Bulldogs Sunday afternoon, as all three goals came off free kicks.
The scoring got started just under eight minutes into the
opening half, when senior Jenna Giardina headed a Kelly Weygand
free kick past starting goalkeeper Katie Mitchell (Deer
Park, NY), notching her seventh goal of the season for the
early 1-0 lead.
After a foul in the 35th minute gave Northeast-10 Conference
Player of the Year Gabriela Demoner a free kick just outside the
18-yard-box, Bryant saw its deficit doubled, as the senior
All-American candidate lifted the freebie over the Bulldog wall and
tucked it under the crossbar past a diving Mitchell.
After the half and up 2-0, Weygand recorded her second assist of
the contest, again off a free kick, when sophomore Mackenzie Bulych
connected on a header and drove the ball past junior goalie
Jessica Clark (Barnstable, Mass.) in the 51st
minute for the final 3-0 tally.
Junior Jessica Neales (Swansea, Mass.) also
spend a portion of the second frame in goal for Bryant, notching
two saves. Mitchell, who was replaced by Clark in the second half,
registered a pair of saves while Clark recorded one. Franklin
Pierce goalie Brittany Ester recorded five saves on the day.
Freshman Kim Rich (Lancaster, Mass.) led the
Bulldogs with three shots off the bench, while Bulych led the
Ravens with four shots.
Franklin Pierce - who beat Holy Family University, 4-0, Friday
night to advance to Sunday's second round - will next take on the
New England Region's top-seeded Saint Rose, Friday, Nov. 16. Saint
Rose defeated Merrimack College, 3-1, in Sunday's other New England
Regional contest.
Bryant finishes its 2007 season with a 17-2-5 record.
