Volleyball Falls to No. 19 UC San Diego and CS Dominguez Hills in Second Day Action at UCSD Tourney

LA JOLLA, Calif. -  The Bryant University women's volleyball team fell to host UC San Diego 3-0 Friday afternoon in second-day action at the UC San Diego Triton Invitational.  The Bulldogs were paced by Likica Grceva (Natick, Mass.) and Vanessa Lavallee's (Gilford, NH) six kills respectively.  Game scores were 30-15, 30-22, 30-24. 

The Tritons (3-0), ranked No. 19 in the AVCA preseason poll, hit .333 for the match and finished with 14 total team blocks.  Amber Ries' had 15 kills to lead the way for the hosts while Rebecca Bailey added 11 kills.  Bryant was held to just one block and three service aces.

Jess Cegarra (Danville, NH) had four kills and added four digs while sophomore Maureen Atkins (Fenton, MO) had nine defensive digs to lead the Bulldogs.  Setter Tiffany Garry (Frankfort, IL) had 16 assists. 

In the second match of the day,  Bryant fell to Cal State Dominguez Hills 3-0 to fall to 0-4 on the season.  Playing its first match of the season against a team that wasn't in the AVCA Top-25 National Poll, the Bryant University women's volleyball team put together a solid effort only to come up short.  Game scores Friday night were 30-25, 30-25, 34-32.

The Bulldogs (0-4) were paced by middle Jess Cegarra (Danville, NH) who pounded out a match-high 15 kills and hit .290 offensively.  The senior had just six errors on 31 swings in the match and added three block assists. 

Vanessa Lavallee (Gilford, NH) and Likica Grceva (Natick, MA) each had nine kills while sophomore Maureen Atkins (Fenton, MO) had a match-best 20 digs defensively.

Junior setter Tiffany Garry (Frankfort, IL), the two-time Northeast-10 Conference Setter of the Year, had a season-best 36 assists. 

Bryant opened the match hitting .250 offensively and racked up 19 kills in the second set. The Bulldogs made a run in the third game, pushing the Toros to the brink, only to fall 34-32. 

Bryant will close out the UCSD Invitational with a match against Cal Poly Pomona on Saturday afternoon.
