BRYANT FALLS TO MERRIMACK 14-10 IN NE-10 SEMIFINALS
EASTON, Mass. - The Bryant women's lacrosse
team fell to Merrimack College in the semifinals of the 2006
Northeast-10 Conference Championships Saturday. Bryant
(11-5) raced out to a 4-0 advantage just nine minutes into the
second semi-final on two goals each by senior Marisa Lawrence
(Falmouth, Mass.) and freshman Delia Glover (Marstons Mills,
Mass.), but Merrimack (12-3) closed back to within 7-5 at the break
and took an 8-7 lead with the first three goals after
intermission. '
Glover's free position tally evened matters
for the Bulldogs at 8-8 with over 20 minutes to play, but the
Warriors netted the next six goals, including three off the stick
of sophomore Allison Kownacki (Orange, Conn.) and a pair by senior
Alison Colarusso (North Andover, Mass.), to take a 14-8 lead with
eight-plus minutes remaining, as Bryant got no closer than the
final score.
Kownacki and
sophomore Amanda Simeone (Nashua, N.H.) each netted four goals in
the win for Merrimack, which also received a hat trick and three
assists off the stick of Colarusso. Freshman Kathleen
Esposito (Simsbury, Conn.) added a hat trick and an assist as well
for the Warriors, who also received single helpers from senior Erin
Black (Walpole, Mass.), junior Jennifer Strachan (Bedford, Mass.)
and freshman Lauren Leddy (Sea Girt, N.J.).
Glover netted five
tallies in the setback for Bryant, which also received a hat trick
from Lawrence and single goals from senior Ashley Fabrizio
(Collegeville, Pa.) and sophomore Caitlin Hansen (Spring Lake,
N.J.). Juniors Shaun Leddy (Sea Girt, N.J.) and Lauren
Carlisle (San Diego, Calif.), along with sophomore Lindsey Cann
(Danvers, Mass.), notched assists for the Bulldogs.
Freshman Gina Sansone
(Norwood, Mass.) picked up the win in goal for Merrimack with a
17-save effort, including 11 stops after intermission, while senior
Samantha Libby (Penacook, N.H.) made 13 stops in net for Bryant as
the Bulldogs outshot the Warriors by a 36-30 margin.
Stonehill and
Merrimack will meet in the conference championship match for the
third time overall, as the Skyhawks posted a 16-3 win over the
Warriors in last year's title contest. The two schools also
met for the 2001 Northeast-10 crown, also won by Stonehill.
