Fast Start Leads Bryant to 12-8 Win Over
Bentley
WALTHAM, Mass. – Bryant University jumped out to a 5-0 lead
and never relinquished the lead as the Bulldogs beat Bentley
College 12-8 in Northeast-10 men's lacrosse action Tuesday
night. With the win Bryant improved to 8-4 overall and 6-2 in the
NE-10, while Bentley fell to 4-6 and 4-4.
The Bulldogs controlled the early part of the contest out shooting
Bentley 11-3 in the opening 15 minutes of play controlling much of
the action. Senior Adam Smith (Bainbridge Island, Wash.) started
the scoring 2:35 into the contest and freshman Corey Crosbie
(Salem, Mass.) netted just over tow minutes later to stake the
Bulldogs to an early lead. Three more consecutive Bryant goals gave
the Bulldogs a 5-0 lead just over ten minutes into the game.
Bentley scored the final goal of the opening quarter through senior
Adam Zurick (Randolph, N.J./Randolph) and the Falcons seemed to
settle down from their early nerves. The second quarter saw Bentley
carry much more of the action, but it was a Bryant goal from
freshman Matt McKeefey (Melville, N.Y.) ten minutes into the
quarter that made the score 6-1. Bentley, which had a 11-4 edge in
shots in the second quarter, scored before the half through
sophomore Dan Scavone (Franklin Lakes, N.J./Don Bosco Prep) to make
the score 6-2 at the break.
Sophomore Michael Kennedy (Port Jefferson, N.Y.) made six saves in
the quarter to keep Bentley at bay.
The Falcons came out flying in the second half and found themselves
down just two after goals by senior Reid Morin (Portland,
Maine/Deering) and freshman Andy Curtis (Chelmsford,
Mass./Chelmsford) within two minutes of the restart. Senior Jedd
Storoshenko (Bayshore, N.Y.) and Bryant responded as the senior
attack would net back-to-back goals to push the score to 8-4 in
favor of the Bulldogs. Bentley hit right back through Scavone and
junior Bob Catala (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y./Yorktown) to make it 8-6
with 4:30 to play in the third quarter.
Two goals would be as close as Bentley would get though as a Steve
Coppinger (Bethesda, Md.) strike for Bryant would be the last goal
of the third quarter and Crosbie and Bryan Molk (Peabody, Mass.)
began the fourth quarter with goals to extend the Bulldog lead to
five with 6:20 to play. Senior Jeff Smercek (West Springfield,
Mass./West Springfield) and Curtis would score in the final minutes
for the Falcons, but it was much too little at that point as Bryant
held on for the win.
Kennedy finished the night with 13 saves. Bryant returns to action
at Saint Michael's on Saturday.
