BRYANT MEN DEFEAT SAINT MICHEAL'S 88-77
SENIOR JOHN WILLIAMS SETS NEW BRYANT CAREER
THREE-POINT RECORD
Boxscore
SMITHFIELD, RI – John Williams (Springfield, MA) scored a
game-high 33 points and made 6 three-point field goals to lead the
Bryant men's basketball team to an 88-77 win over visiting
Saint Michael's College Wednesday night. It was
Bryant's fifth win in-a-row, setting up a big game Saturday
when Bryant (18-7, 13-7 NE-10) hosts the region's top team,
Bentley for a 3:30 pm game Saturday afternoon.
Williams, coming off a 38-point performance Saturday in a win
over Saint Anselm, became Bryant's all-time career
three-point leader in the game Wednesday night.
Williams wasted little time setting the record as the senior tied
the record with a three to open the game and nailed the
296th of his career at the 18:21 mark shortly after to
take over the all-time record. Jason Bennett held the
previous record of 295 from 1997 to 2000. Williams now has
300 career three-pointers and 92 for the season.
The Bulldogs led 41-32 at the half and led 63-48 before Saint
Michael's would close to within 63-54 on a pair of free
throws by Brian Monohan (Kinderhook, NY) with just over 10 minutes
left. Bryant would respond with a 10-2 run keyed by a Chris
Burns (Merrimack, NH) baseline three and a Nick Pontes (New
Bedford, Mass.) fast break basket to stretch the lead to 70-56 and
the Bulldogs never looked back.
Saint Michael's (7-18, 4-16 NE-10) got 28 points and 13
rebounds from senior guard BJ Robertson while Monohan finished with
18 points and 8 boards for the Purple Knights. Sophomore
guard James Sorrentine (Pawtucket, RI) came into the game averaging
10 points per game but finished with just three points on 1 of 8
shooting and had four rebounds in 33 minutes.
Bryant got 12 points and four boards from Jon Ezeokoli (South
Orange, NJ) while Dan Hammond (Brunswick, Maine) had 10 points and
finished with 12 rebounds – just one rebound shy of a
career-high. Hammond also dished out six assists and blocked
two shots. Freshman Jarrenn Wright (Cincinnati, OH) had 8
points and 4 rebounds in 21 minutes as the Bulldogs shot 42.5
percent from the floor and made 9 three-pointers.
Bryant will host 20th-ranked Bentley College this
Saturday for a 3:30 pm game at the Chace Athletic Center. The
Falcons are coming off a 78-61 win over UMass Lowell Wednesday
night and boast the fifth longest current winning streak in the
nation. They currently sit atop the Northeast-10 Conference
standings with a 19-6 overall record and 16-4 league mark.
Bryant is ranked No. 4 for the second week in a row in
the latest regional rankings released Wednesday.
