Bulldogs win thriller in Overtime to advance to the
Semi-Finals
NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. (October 30, 2005) –
Sophomore Mike Gargiulo scored his second goal of the game
with 1:22 remaining in overtime to lift No. 7 seed Bryant
University to a 3-2 win over No. 2 seed Merrimack College Sunday
afternoon in Northeast-10 men's soccer quarterfinal action at
Warrior Field.
Bryant (8-5-4) advances to the semifinals of the Northeast-10
tournament and will face No. 3 seed Le Moyne Wednesday afternoon in
Syracuse, N.Y. at 2 p.m. The Warriors (11-5-2), meanwhile, will now
wait and see if they receive a berth into the NCAA
Tournament.
Gargiulo ended the contest in the 103rd minute of
play when he picked up a loose ball and sent it into the far left
side of the net from 25 yards out for his third goal of the season.
His goal came not long after Merrimack sophomore Kiel Milliken
(Kingston, Mass.) tied the game at two with 2:27 remaining in
regulation when he scored on a direct free kick from 22 yards
out.
The Bulldogs opened the scoring at 24:04 when Gargiulo lofted
a shot over Merrimack goalkeeper Ted Kakambouras (Melrose, Mass.)
off a pass from Wheeler Smith. Merrimack tied the score 11 minutes
into the second half on a goal by senior Dave DeSimone (Woburn,
Mass.) at 56:39. Sophomore Martin Gabadian (Montevideo, Uruguay)
was credited with an assist on the play, his second of the
season.
Bryan Gravel gave the Bulldogs a 2-1 lead with just over nine
minutes remaining in the game when he drilled a shot from 30 yards
out into the upper right corner of the net.
Bulldog goalkeeper Alex Bissias made two
saves to earn his fifth win of the season while Kakambouras made
two saves for the Warriors.
