VOLLEYBALL SWEPT BY PENN SATURDAY AFTERNOON

QUEENS, N.Y. - The Bryant University women's volleyball team was swept by Penn, 3-0, in its third and final match of the Jack Kaiser Volleyball Classic on Saturday, Sept. 19 at Carnesecca Arena. 

The Bulldogs (5-11) battled the Quakers (8-2) to the wire despite the sweep, losing all three sets by a combined 11 points.  

Layla Olatunde
drilled a game-high 13 kills on a .478 hitting percentage and Carrina Barron logged a team-high 21 digs.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
 
SET 1- Penn, 25-20 
  • After trailing 9-5, the Bulldogs scored seven unanswered points, including kills from Olatunde, Nina Gavin and Kalia Alvarado, to take a 12-9 lead.  
  • The Quakers and Bulldogs proceeded to go back and forth, with Penn later holding a 20-18 advantage.  
  • Bryant pulled within one through an Olatunde kill, but the Quakers responded with a 5-1 surge to claim the first set.  
SET 2- Penn, 25-23  
  • Olatunde and Kaitlin Curran powered down kills and Claudia Camacho-Castro delivered an ace to give the Bulldogs a 12-9 edge, forcing a Penn timeout.  
  • Bryant kept its lead at three until the Quakers scored in four of five rallies to knot the score at 18-18.  
  • Curran produced a pair of kills and Gavin tallied another once Penn reached set-point before the Quakers secured the second set.  
SET 3- Penn, 25-22 
  • The Quakers held a 12-8 lead after the first 20 rallies.  
  • Back-to-back kills from Madison Koeller and a Penn service error put the Bulldogs within one, 16-15.  
  • Penn edged out Bryant by two points the remainder of the set to complete the sweep.  
STATS AND NOTES: 
  • Curran finished with 14.5 total points through 10 kills, three aces and two block assists. 
  • Koeller recorded a near double-double of 19 assists and 9 digs.  
  • Alvarado posted 13 digs, racking up double-digit dig performances in all three of Bryant's matches at the Jack Kaiser Volleyball Classic.  
  • The Bulldogs outkilled the Quakers, 40-38. 
  • Barron has racked up 10-or-more digs in 13 of 15 matches this season.  
 NEXT UP:  
The Bulldogs will head to New Britain, Connecticut to take on Central Connecticut on Tuesday, Sept. 22. First serve is set for 6 p.m. and the match will be streamed on NEC Front Row.
