VOLLEYBALL SPLITS DOUBLEHEADER ON DAY ONE OF BRYANT INVITATIONAL

SMITHFIELD, R.I. - The Bryant University women's volleyball team fell to Marist, 3-1, before defeating Merrimack, 3-1, in its first two matches of the Bryant Invitational at the Chace Athletic Center on Friday, Sept. 11.  

The Bulldogs (4-6) took only the second set against the Red Foxes (3-6). After the Warriors (0-8) claimed the first set, Bryant handled them in the next three to earn the victory.  
 
Brookelyn Talmadge led the Bulldogs with 11 kills against Marist, while Claudia Camacho-Castro posted a team-high 16 digs. Nina Gavin racked up a career- and game-high 20 kills against Merrimack and Madison Koeller logged a 35-assist, 19-dig double-double.

"We played with tempo tonight, and the speed beat the block. Our service game was spot on. The leadership of Madison Koeller, both defensively and running the offense, was fantastic. Our middles were up and available in transition and pulled the block. Nina Gavin finished the ball and blocked efficiently. The defense was smooth and overall, a great team win."

HOW IT HAPPENED: Marist  
SET 1- Marist, 25-20 
  • The Red Foxes held a 12-6 advantage behind 4-0 run.  
  • Bryant battled back, knotting the score at 17-17 through a Layla Olatunde kill, Marist service error, and ace from Sophia Gonzalez.  
  • After another Marist service error evened the score again at 20-20, the Red Foxes scored five straight points to secure the first set.  
SET 2- Bryant, 25-21 
  • The Bulldogs owned a 13-9 lead following a 4-0 surge that included a kill and service error from Kailtin Curran.  
  • Marist later found momentum and took a 20-19 edge.  
  • Bryant scored six of the last seven points in the set. Hannah Jackson and Kalia Alvarado logged kills in that span.  
SET 3- Marist, 25-14  
  • A kill from Gonzalez brought Bryant down 7-4 early.  
  • The Red Foxes rattled off an 11-4 run to take a 18-8 lead.  
  • Olatunde produced a kill and block on back-to-back plays to trim Bryant's advantage to 23-14, but Marist closed the set.  
SET 4- Marist, 25-17 
  • The Bulldogs scored five unanswered points, featuring a kill from Jackson and ace from Gonzalez, to take an 8-3 advantage. 
  • Marist deadlocked the set at 15-15.  
  • The Red Foxes outscored Bryant 10-2 the rest of the way to win the match.  
 
HOW IT HAPPENED: Merrimack 
SET 1- Merrimack, 25-21  
  • Bryant carried an 11-9 edge through 20 rallies after Curran powered down a kill.  
  • The Bulldogs grew their advantage, holding a 15-11 lead, until Merrimack registered four-straight scores.  
  • The Warriors edged out Bryant the remainder of the set. 
Set 2- Bryant, 25-18  
  • Madison Koeller dumped off a kill to level the score at 7-7. 
  • Both teams traded points over the next 20 rallies to keep the score even at 17-17. 
  • The Bulldogs went on a 7-0 surge, with three kills coming from Gavin, to take command and ultimately win the set.  
Set 3- Bryant, 25-13 
  • The Bulldogs scored five straight points to take a 12-5 advantage.  
  • A Gavin kill and Carrina Barron ace later grew Bryant's lead to 17-8.  
  • Gavin slammed down two more kills before Koeller delivered an ace to come away with the set.  
Set 4- Bryant, 25-13  
  • Bryant held a 12-7 lead after Olatunde tallied a kill.  
  • The Bulldogs then put up five answered points, two of them being kills from Gavin, to grow their margin to 17-8.  
  • Bryant protected their lead as Jackson nailed the match-point kill.  
 STATS AND NOTES: 
  • Jackson logged double-digit kills in both matches. 
  • Curran tallied 15 digs against Marist and Barron notched 19 digs against Merrimack.  
  • The Bulldogs hit as a .273 against the Warriors.  
NEXT UP:  
The Bulldogs return to action on Saturday, Sept. 12, in a rematch against Marist at 10 a.m. in the Chace Athletic Center. The match will be streamed on ESPN+. Bryant then faces Fordham at 4 p.m. at the Chace Athletic Center to close the Bryant Invitational. The match will be streamed on AE.TV.
