JOHNSON'S LATE GOAL LIFTS BRYANT PAST HOFSTRA, 2-1, ON SUNDAY

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y.  – Emerson Johnson scored with 23 seconds left to lift the Bryant field hockey team to a thrilling 2-1 victory over Hofstra on Sunday afternoon at Cindy Lewis Stadium.
With the win, the Bulldogs split their opening weekend of play and snapped a 16-game road losing streak that dated back to 2023. The Bulldogs open their home schedule on Friday (Sept. 4) against Merrimack at Cowen Field.
Bryant controlled the game over the final five minutes but was unable to get anything past Hofstra's Luci Hollister. The Bulldogs then drew 10th penalty corner of the afternoon with 33 seconds left. Callie Caito took the insert and dangled her way towards the cage before the ball caromed to left of Hollister. Johnson, who had inserted, collected the free ball and flipped it home.

Key Moment
  • Hofstra had a chance to take a 2-1 lead early in the fourth quarter but a penalty stroke rang off the left post.
  • Johnson's goal with 23 seconds left sealed the deal.
First Quarter
  • Bryant wasted little time in grabbing a 1-0 lead as Funes scored just 1:23 in. The Bulldogs were able to draw the early penalty corner but Funes' initial try was stopped but Bryant was awarded another corner. Emerson Johnson inserted to Funes and the Argentinian native ripped a shot low into the cage.
  • The Black and Gold continued to put the pressure on in the first 15 minutes, drawing four total penalty corners and forcing Luci Hollister to make three saves in cage.
Second Quarter
  • Hofstra had its best chance midway through the second quarter as it earned consecutive corners. Maud van Lierop made sparkling pad save on the second corner to keep Bryant ahead, 1-0.
Third Quarter
  • The Pride were able to tie the game in the final two minutes of the third quarter. After a Bryant turnover, Sarah Smalley was able to carry the ball into the circle and her bounding ball bounced through and into the cage.
Fourth Quarter
  • Hofstra had an early chance to take the lead as it was awarded a penalty stroke just 90 seconds in the quarter.
  • Kesia Richardson, however, hit the left post, keeping the game tied.
  • Bryant earned a penalty corner with three minutes remaining but Funes was denied.
  • Hollister then made two saves on the doorstep a minute later to keep it tied.
  • Bryant continued to press and earned another corner with 33 seconds left. After a great effort from Caito, Johnson collected the loose ball and flipped it home.
Bryant Notes and Notables
  • Bryant is now 3-4 all-time against Hofstra. It was Bryant's first win in Hempstead since 2018.
  • The Bulldogs snapped a 16-game road losing streak with the victory. It is their first road win since Sept. 26, 2023 at Holy Cross.
  • Johnson's goal was the second of her collegiate career and her first game-winning goal. She added an assist for her first-career three-point game.
  • Funes recorded her first career goal.
  • Elsa Bishop collected her first career point with an assist on Funes' goal.
  • Maud van Lierop picked up the win, making six saves.

Bryant opens its home schedule next Friday as it hosts Merrimack at Cowen Field. Pass back is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
