Key Moment
  • Davis was able to limit NJIT to just two runs in the fourth inning. The Highlanders had already scored twice and had the bases loaded with one out and the top of the lineup at the plate. Davis induced a shallow fly to right and a fly ball to left to leave them loaded.
How it Happened
  • Ty Davis and Mark Scamardella matched zeroes for the first three innings before both teams broke through in the fourth. In the top half, Ellis Garcia doubled with one out and Carlos Irizarry scored him with a two-out double down the left field line. A diving play by the second baseman on a Mike Fiatarone ground ball saved a run.
  • In the bottom half, the leadoff runner reached for NJIT on a throwing error. Ty Sallie's bunt then rolled perfectly up the third base line for a single. Stead then laid down a bunt on a 2-2 pitch and Davis tried to get the runner at third but threw it away, tying the game. A HBP loaded the bases and a wild pitch made it 2-1. Davis limited the damage as he stranded the bases loaded with two fly outs.
  • Bryant had a chance to tie the game in the top of the fifth as Justin Hackett singled with two outs, stole second and was trying to score on a single to left from Casey Wensley but Austin Francis unleashed a strong throw to get him at the plate.
  • NJIT went to the bullpen to start the seventh and Bryant pounced, scoring twice to take the lead. Charlie Saul opened the inning with a double off the top of the left field wall, Jacob Gaudreau was HBP and Hackett loaded the bases with a bunt single. A wild pitch scored the tying run and Greger made it 3-2 with an RBI ground out to second.
  • The Bulldogs extended their lead in the eighth and Kingsbury used his speed to manufacture a run. He led off with a slow chopper between first and second beat the pitcher to the bag. Kingsbury then stole second and third before scoring on sac fly to left from Saul.
  • Saul then made a big defensive play in the bottom of the eighth. With runners on the corners and two out, Saul charged a sinking liner and made a tumbling catch. Had the ball got by, two runs would have scored to tie the game.
  • Bryant added an insurance run in the ninth as Hackett's slow ground ball to short was thrown wild at first, putting him at second. Hackett then stole  third and scored as Greger singled through the drawn-in infield.
