WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL DEFEATS UALBANY IN CONFERENCE OPENER

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – The Bryant volleyball team began America East play with a four-set win over the UAlbany Great Danes on Sunday afternoon in front of an energetic crowd at the Chace Athletic Center.

The Bulldogs utilized a well-balanced attack with 15 kills from Arianna Ugolini, 13 kills from Kaitlin Curran, and 11 kills from Ruth Ochelli to power them to the victory.

"An exciting team win today. In the first two sets we showed that we are a very complete team with a lot of balance. The third set we lost a bit of focus then recovered to battle evenly in the fourth."

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • SET 1 – The Bulldogs pulled ahead 11-9 to begin the first set, highlighted by a trio of kills from Arianna Ugolini. Bryant then went on an impressive 10-3 run to take a commanding 21-12 lead. Madison Koeller shined with a pair of kills and a service ace. Bryant capped off the run by scoring five straight points as Ruth Ochelli chalked up a pair of kills, Arianna Ugolini added another, and London Hunt recorded a solo block. The Bulldogs closed out the first set with ease, sealing the win 25-15 as Brookelyn Talmadge and London Hunt put on the finishing touches, each notching a kill.
  • SET 2 – The momentum from the previous set carried over for the Bulldogs, breaking open the second set on a 10-2 run. London Hunt hammered a kill and Claudia Camacho-Castro recorded three consecutive service aces. The Bulldogs stretched their lead to 19-8 as Arianna Ugolini pounded a trio of kills, Kaitlin Curran added a pair, and Nina Gavin, Ruth Ochelli, and London Hunt each added one. Madison Koeller also combined for a block with London Hunt. The Great Danes couldn't keep up with the Bulldogs, as Bryant cruised to another 25-15 win to go up 2-0 in sets. The Bulldogs used their well-rounded attack to polish off the second set, with Arianna Ugolini, Madison Koeller, London Hunt, and Ruth Ochelli each recording a kill.
  • SET 3 – The Great Danes showed their desperation in the third set, racing out to a 10-5 lead. The Bulldogs cut the deficit to two, making it 15-13. Arianna Ugolini added a pair of kills and Kaitlin Curran and Claudia Camacho-Castro each recorded a service ace. Bryant trimmed the UAlbany lead to two once again, trailing 22-20. The Bulldogs scored four straight points as Ruth Ochelli chalked up a pair of kills and Kaitlin Curran added another service ace. The Bulldogs then took the lead 25-24, scoring three straight as Brookelyn Talmadge and Arianna Ugolini each tallied a kill. The third set needed extras as neither side could put the other away. Bryant took the 27-26 lead with kills from Arianna Ugolini and Madison Koeller, but it wasn't enough as UAlbany won the next three points to secure the 29-27 third set victory and stay alive in the match.
  • SET 4 – The Bulldogs pulled ahead 9-6 in the fourth set as Kaitlin Curran chalked up a pair of kills and Madison Koeller added a kill and a service ace. The Great Danes were resilient, going up 16-15 by scoring six straight points to take the lead. The set continued to be a seesaw battle as the score was knotted up at twenty. The Bulldogs were powered by a pair of kills from Kaitlin Curran and a kill each from Maeve Voltz and Ruth Ochelli. Bryant closed out the match in thrilling fashion, winning the next five points to secure the win. Carrina Barron added a service ace, Kaitlin Curran tallied a pair of kills, and Ruth Ochelli delivered the final knockout blow with a kill.
