Durand, Zyons deliver as Bryant beats Maine, 9-8, in 11 innings

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – Brandyn Durand's second home run in as many games tied the game and Zac Zyons drove in the winning run with single as the Bryant baseball team rallied for a dramatic 9-8 walk-off victory in 11 innings against Maine on a sunny, warm and windy day at Conaty Park.

The Bulldogs improve to 25-16-1 overall and 12-5 in league play with their 14th win in the last 15 games. Bryant has won 10 of its last 11 league games, picking up its fourth-straight series victory with Saturday's win.

Bryant trailed 8-7 entering the bottom of the 11th on Saturday. Maine's closer Sebastian Holt returned to the mound for his second inning of work as he looked to close it out. Holt's 1-0 breaking ball to Durand was sent deep to left center for a game-tying solo home run. Matt D'Amato followed with a bloop double down the left field line and advanced to third with no outs.

Holt then struck out the next two batters but Zyons rapped a 1-0 breaking ball through the right side to score D'Amato and set off a raucous celebration between first and second.

D'Amato finished a home run shy of the cycle, while Zyons (2-5, 2B, 2R), Drew Wyers (2-5, 2B, RB), Gavin Greger (2-5, 2RBI) and Durand (2-5, HR) all finished with two hits.

Five Bryant relievers combined to strikeout 13 batters over the final eight innings.

Key Moments
  • Durand tied the game with a solo home run and Zyons walked it off with a single in the 11th inning.
How it Happened
  • Maine took advantage of a two-out throwing error by Zyons on a slowly hit ground ball to score two runs in the first. Zyons' wide throw to first allowed the first run to score and a second scored on an RBI double.
  • Bryant responded with a three-run first inning to take the lead. Zyons and Gavin Noriega both walked and Wyers hit a high fly ball that got caught in the wind and dropped in no-mans land in right field. The throw back to the infield got away, allowing Zyons to score. Greger then delivered a two-run single through the right side to make it 3-2.
  • Maine tied the game in the second as Chris Bear's pop up carried into shallow right and was caught by a tumbling Charlie Saul, allowing a run to score from third.
  • D'Amato then led off the Bryant second with a walk, took third on an errant pickoff and scored on a Cam Papetti sac fly to give Bryant a 4-3 lead.
  • Dean O'Neill tied it back up with a long solo home run to left center in the top of the third.
  • Bryant responded as Noriega singled to third, advanced to third on a Wyers double and scored an a ground out from Pat D'Amico.
  • Brody Rasmussen retied the game with a solo home run to leadoff the top of the fifth.
  • In the Bryant sixth, Durand singled to left center and D'Amato scored him with a triple into the right field corner, giving Bryant a 6-5 lead.
  • It was short-lived as Evan Menzel hit a two-out, two-run home run to dead center in the top of the seventh to give Maine a 7-6 lead.
  • Zyons, though, led off the Bryant seventh with a double and came around to score on a sac fly from Wyers.
  • Maine threatened in the eighth, putting two on but Owen Birchard came out of the bullpen to get a big strikeout of Bear to end the inning.
  • Landon White stranded a runner at second in the 10th with a strikeout, as well.
  • In the 11th, Whitehead was hit by a pitch and scored as Rasmussen's sinking liner to center alluded a diving Greger for an RBI double.
  • Durand then stepped to the plate in the bottom of the 11th and walloped a 1-0 breaking ball over the left field wall to tie the game. D'Amato followed with a bloop double down the left field line. Holt, however, rebounded to strikeout the next two batters. Zyons then delivered, rolling a game-winning single through the right side to score D'Amato.
