Five run sixth lifts Baseball over Delaware on Saturday

NEWARK, Del. – Matt D'Amato drove in four runs and the Bryant baseball team used a five-run sixth inning to earn an 8-6 victory over Delaware on Saturday at Bob Hannah Stadium.
 
The Bulldogs improve to 3-4-1 with the victory. Bryant will look for a series victory when the teams meet Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
 
D'Amato finished 2-for-3 with a home run and four RBI from the No. 9 spot in the batting order. Zac Zyons (2-5, HR, 2RBI), Charlie Saul (2-5, RBI) and Evan Blake (2-4, 2B) all finished with two hits.
 
Michael Belcher struck out six over 4.1 innings in his longest outing of the year, while Toby Scheidt earned his first win with 1.1 innings of relief.

How it Happened
  • Zyons broke a scoreless tie in the third with a two-out home run to right field.
  • The Blue Hens were able to tie the game with a sac fly in the bottom of the third. Belcher was able to limit the damage with a big strikeout of Delaware's best hitter.
  • Belcher then posted two more strikeouts to strand two runners in the fourth.
  • Bryant broke the tie in the fifth with one swing of the bat. D'Amato drove a 1-0 pitch well over the right field wall for a two-run home run and a 3-1 Bryant lead.
  • Delaware put a runner to third in the bottom of the inning but reliever Toby Scheidt entered and induced an infield pop and got a strikeout to end the rally.
  • Bryant then rallied for five runs in the top of the sixth to make it 8-1. Durand started the inning with a double and came around to score on an RBI double from Pat D'Amico. Saul followed with an RBI single to left to make it 5-1.
  • D'Amato kept his big day going with a two-out, two-run single through the right side. Zyons followed with an RBI double to cap the scoring and make it 8-1.
  • Delaware answered with two runs in the bottom of the sixth and one in the seventh to tighten things up. Two singles brought in runs in the sixth before Bradley Lewis knocked down a comebacker to strand the bases loaded.
  • In the seventh, Scamardella entered after two walks and hit the first batter he faced to load the bases with one out. He followed with a big strikeout before an infield single made it 8-4. Scamardella then struck out Tyer looking to leave the bases loaded.
  • Delaware battled in the ninth, scoring twice with a one-out double. Landon White induced a fly out and got a strikeout to end the game.
