2025 Men's Lacrosse Season Preview

SMITHFIELD, R.I. -- The Bryant University men's lacrosse team begins its 26th season and its third under the direction of head coach Brad Ross on Saturday, Feb. 8, when it takes on Providence College.

The Bulldogs are coming off a 9-5 campaign that saw them go 4-3 in their second season in the America East Conference. The Black and Gold enter the season ranked third in the annual preseason coaches poll.

Offense

Following the departures of their three top point scorers from a season ago, the Bulldogs will see a mix of old and new faces leading the offense this season. Jack Lonsinger returns for the Black and Gold following a strong sophomore campaign that saw him tally 36 points (27g, 9a). Joining him will be 2024 America East All-Rookie selection Dawson Rielly, who posted 12 points (9g, 3a) in 10 games. Another standout rookie for Bryant was Patrick Walsh, who started his career off on a high note, scoring a goal in the 2024 season opener at Providence. He finished his freshman season with nine points (7g, 2a).

Senior transfer Brian Russell joins the Black and Gold following three seasons with Merrimack. In his 39 games with the Warriors, Russell tallied 65 points (51g, 14a) and 37 ground balls. Russell was named a captain by the team this fall.

John Tomsheck saw more playing time for the Bulldogs in 2024, appearing in 14 games and starting three. He posted 12 points (8g, 4a) on 17 shots. He recorded his first career hat trick against Quinnipiac on Feb. 24. Sophomore Tiernan Lathrop also showed some flashes on offense a season ago, scoring in three straight games against Fairfield, UMBC, and UMass Lowell. Cole Braun returns to the field after missing last year with injury. In 2023, Braun appeared in 14 games and tallied four points (3g, 1a).

Richie Reid joined Bryant after spending his freshman season at St. John's. In 15 games with the Red Storm, he made seven starts and posted six goals on 30 shots. He also recorded four ground balls. Brett Callahan joins the Black and Gold as a grad transfer following three seasons at Bucknell. Callahan appeared in six games for the Bison in 2024 and recorded two points (1g, 1a), along with two ground balls and a caused turnover.

The remaining offensive players for Bryant are Zac Amend, Luke Aasheim, Kyle Bacso, Luca Elmaleh, Tom Caito, Matt Groeninger, Kyle Fedorcha, Ben Dufoe, Max Dantona, Connor Ruppert, Nick Pisano, Owen West, Dante Mariani, Luke Bayne, and Caden Lennon.

Defense

Short-stick defensive midfielders Spencer Clark and Sam Klein return for the Black and Gold in 2025. Last season, Klein played in seven games, posting four ground balls and four caused turnovers. After being limited to five games last season, Clark will look to return to his 2023 form, when he recorded six ground balls and four caused turnovers. Nick Vance joins as a transfer following a decorated career at Division III Denison University. Last season, he appeared in 20 games and recorded 39 points (29g, 10a) and 36 ground balls. AJ Monaco, Killian Lathrop, Jake Carbone, Austin Daigneault, Anthony Moza, and Zack Bender round out the remaining SSDMs.

Bryant's defense will include Drew Lucas and Tanner Alexander, a duo that helped the Black and Gold feature one of the league's top defenses. The two of them combined for 75 ground balls and 41 caused turnovers. Lucas enters the season as a preseason all-conference selection by the America East.

The Bulldogs also bring back experience in the form of Luke Mead and Ian Peck. Mead scooped 22 ground balls and caused 12 turnovers in 14 games last season. In their Ocean State Cup-clinching victory at Brown, he scored a goal, helping Bryant win 10-7. The defensive end will also feature junior Jack Barton, Kyle Capodanno, JT Werkmeister, Brayden Fuller, Kijana Lloyd, and Jack McCloskey.

At LSM, Bryant will see the return of Gabe Chinitz, who posted eight ground balls and tallied an assist in 10 games behind a veteran-led unit. He will be accompanied by freshmen Trevor Preston, Nate Patterson, and Gavin McCarthy.

Goalie

Bryant will see Scott Einarson back in cage this spring following an outstanding rookie campaign. Einarson took over the starting goalie spot five games into the season and did not disappoint. The Billerica, Mass., native started in 10 games and had a 7-2 record (left one game early). He amassed 105 saves and 30 ground balls.

Einarson will have good company this season with the return of James Carr, who made three saves for Bryant against UMass Lowell last season, and graduate transfer Sage Garito, who joins the Bulldogs after four seasons at Franklin & Marshall College. Garito made 150 saves and had a .512 save percentage with Franklin & Marshall in 2024. Rounding out the goalies is freshman Will Murphy, who hails from Groton, Mass.

Faceoff

The Bulldogs will see a new primary face at X this season following the graduation of Nathan Laliberte and Jacob Alexander.

JJ Murphy saw the most game action of any returner last season for Bryant. He appeared in six games, winning 7-17 faceoffs and picking up seven ground balls. Sam Baker will also be back for the Black and Gold after joining the team as a walk-on in 2024. The Bulldogs' faceoff room will also include Graham Tyson and Jordan Hernando.
