Volleyball set to host the 2024 Ocean State Cup

SMITHFIELD, R.I.- The Bryant women's volleyball team is set to host the 2024 Ocean State Cup volleyball tournament. The Bulldogs will square off against the University of Rhode Island on Friday at 4:00 PM followed by matches against Brown and Providence on Saturday.

Bulldog Notes and Notables
  • Theresa Garlacy will be looking to pick up her 600th career coaching victory this weekend. She currently sits at 599 following the team's victory over Stonehill on Wednesday.
  • Through 11 sets so far this season, Arianna Ugolini ranks 2nd in the America East in kills per set at 3.09. She is also 4th in hitting percentage (.306).
  • Bryant has four players in the top 10 for the America East in blocks. Brookelyn Talmadge leads the Bulldogs with 11 total rejections. She is followed by London Hunt, Nadine Abdat, and Arianna Ugolini.
  • Carrina Barron leads the America East in total digs with 57. Carolina Camacho ranks 3rd with 44 and Fabi Castro is 5th with 41.
  • Carolina Camacho and Melis Isik combined for 34 assists in Bryant's three set win over Stonehill.
Scouting the Rams
  • Through three matches so far this season, Madi Disu leads URI in total kills with 30 and is also averaging 2.73 kills per set.
  •  The main facilitator of the Rams offense has been Kiera McCarles. This season she already has 83 assists and is averaging 7.55 a/s. McCarles and Disu are currently tied for the team lead in aces with 5 so far this year.
  • On the defensive side of the ball, Chloe Abuto has stood out in 2024. She leads the Rams with 8 blocks which is double the next closest player.
  • Edie Lamoreaux is URI team lead in digs with 37.
  • The Rams are coached by Ryan Sullivan, he is in his first year with the program. Prior to his time with the Rams, Sullivan was the associate head coach at UNH.

Scouting the Bears
  • Brown will kick off their season at the Ocean State Cup when they take on Providence College.
  • Mariia Sidorova and Kayla Griebl are back for the Bears after each posting over 2.00 kills per set last season. Sidorova finished the year with 2.70 kills per set while Griebl added 2.08. 
  • Last season, Beau Vanderlaan finished second in the Ivy League, 17th in the NCAA and set a school record with a .402 hitting percentage. She also led Brown with 246 kills and 99 blocks. 
  • Jessie Golden anchors Brown's defense after being named Ivy League Defensive Player of the Year and First Team All-Ivy as a sophomore. Golden led the Ivy League and was fourth in the NCAA in digs per set with 5.65. Golden recorded double-figure digs in every appearance last season and had 20+ digs in 12 matches. 
  • Brown is coached by Taylor Virtue who is set to begin her second season at the helm.

Scouting the Friars
  • Providence kicked off their 2024 season at the Puerto Rico Clásico and went 1-1 with a loss to Iowa and a win over Evansville.
  • Last year, the Friars finished with a 9-21 overall record and a 3-15 mark in the BIG EAST Conference. 
  • Lyric Berry was named to the BIG EAST All-Freshman Team in 2022. She led the Friars in solo blocks (28) and was second on the team in total blocks (97).
  • Shaliyah Rhoden led PC in kills last season with 337.
  • The head coach of Providence is Margot Royer-Johnson, she is entering her 25th season.
