Volleyball falls to UMBC in five sets

BALTIMORE, MD.– The Bryant women's volleyball team dropped their Sunday matchup against the UMBC Retrievers in five sets on Sunday in Baltimore. London Hunt would tie her career high in blocks and Arianna Ugolini would record 23 kills. Bryant is now 18-9 overall and 4-5 in conference play.

HOW IT HAPPENED 
  • Set 1- UMBC would go on a strong 6-2 to start to play on Sunday, however, the Bulldogs would manage to come back and tie the match 12-12. Bryant would take their first lead of the game thanks to a Carolina Camacho ace and lead 20-19. Bryant would prove able to withstand a late Retrievers rally and win the first set 26-24. Arianna Ugolini would record 6 kills in the opening set and Madison Koeller would tally 8 assists.
  • Set 2- The Retrievers would get off to a hot start in the second set thanks to an 11-3 run. Although they would make late strides in the set, Bryant would prove unable to overcome the early deficit. UMBC would tie the match at 1-1 with a 25-12 set 2 victory.
  • Set 3- Bryant would respond in the third set thanks to another 8 kills from Arianna Ugolini and 4 blocks from London Hunt and Aubrey LaPour. This effort would power the Bulldogs to a 26-24 victory and give them a 2-1 advantage.
  • Set 4- The Bulldogs would see a balanced offensive attack play in their favor for most of the fourth set as they worked their way out to a 20-16 lead. UMBC however would manage to rally back and put pressure on Bryant. The Retrievers would go on a  late 6-1 run to win 26-24  and force a decisive fifth set.Aubrey LaPour, Arianna Ugolini, Fabi Castro, and London Hunt would all have 3 kills in the frame.
  • Set 5- Bryant would get off to an excellent start to begin the fifth set thanks to a 10-5 run. However UMBC would go on an outstanding rally and complete a miraculous comeback; winning the set 16-14. Fabi Castro and Brookelyn Talmadge each had 3 kills in the final set. London Hunt would also record a pair of blocks. 
STATS
  • Arianna Ugolini led the Bulldogs with 23 kills against UMBC.
  • Carolina Camacho and Madison Koeller would combine for 49 assists for the Black and Gold. Camacho would lead the pair with 28 assists and Koeller would finish with 21.
  • London Hunt would put together a phenomenal defensive effort and tie her career high for blocks with 8.
  • Claudia Camacho-Castro would also excel on the defensive side as she would post a career high 20 digs. Prior to today's match, Camacho-Castro had not recorded more than 7 digs.
  • Carolina Camacho and Arianna Ugolini each had multiple service aces in the match.
MATCH NOTES
  • Bryant concludes the regular season series 1-1 against the Retrievers as both sides defended home court.
  • This is the third match this season where Ugolini has tallied 20 or more kills.

The Bulldogs will close out the 2024 regular season with a Senior Day showdown against UAlbany on Saturday, November 16th. First serve is set for 2:00pm.
