Volleyball downs Fairfield in four

FAIRFIELD, CONN.– The Bryant women's volleyball team got back into the win column on Wednesday after defeating the Fairfield Stags in four sets. Bryant finishes 13-4 against non-conference teams this regular season. It is their best record since the team's transition to Division I.

"Huge defensive effort tonight; both blocking and floor defense. Our setters established the middle early and created lots of seams for our pins.We served tough and were super gritty. Really proud of our team!"
HOW IT HAPPENED 
  • Set 1- The Bulldogs would get out to a good start against Fairfield to begin the night, however the Stags would slowly work their way back and take control of the set. With the score tied at 18-18, Fairfield would go on a 7-2 run and win the first set 25-20. Arianna Ugolini and Fabi Castro would combine for 7 kills in the opening frame.
  • Set 2- The second set played similar to the first as both teams' offenses thrived. Fairfield would hold off the Bulldogs first chance at set point although this time around the Black and Gold would stay collected and win the match at 1-1 after winning 27-25. Bryant would go on a 3-1 run to end the second. Brookelyn Talmadge would have an incredible performance in the set; finishing with 4 kills and 3 blocks.
  • Set 3- Bryant would get off to a remarkable start to open the third set; going on a 12-5 run. This early momentum would power them to a 25-14 victory and give them a 2-1 advantage. Ana Fuertes-Brito would have a big impact off the bench; posting 4 kills. Madison Koeller would also post 6 assists.
  • Set 4- The Bulldogs would start off just as strong in the fourth frame thanks to incredible offense from London Hunt and Fabi Castro. At one point they would lead the set 18-8. Fairfield would not go quietly and managed to get Bryant's lead down to two. In the end though, the Bulldogs would hold on and win the set 25-22; winning the match by a final score of 3-1.
STATS
  • Arianna Ugolini led the Black and Gold with 14 kills on the night.
  • Madison Koeller and Carolina Camacho combined for 40 assists against the Stags. Koeller would post a double-double with 20 assists and 10 digs. Camacho would notch 20 assists of her own along with 8 digs and a service ace.
  • London Hunt would be effective on both sides of the ball. She would end the night with 10 kills and a season high 6 blocks.
  • Fabi Castro would lead Bryant with 4 service aces in the match. She would also have 11 kills and 3 blocks.
  • Carrina Barron would also have a double-double for the Bulldogs. She would tally 12 assists and a team high 12 digs.
MATCH NOTES
  • Bryant earns its first win against Fairfield at the Division I level. Prior to tonight's match the Black and Gold were 1-5 all-time against the Stags (0-4 at DI). Their last win against Fairfield came back in 1995.
  • With tonight's win, the Bulldogs snap the Stags 9 game win streak.

Bryant will return to conference play this Friday when they travel to Newark to take on the NJIT Highlanders. First serve is set for 6:00 pm.
