Box Score SMITHFIELD, R.I. – The Bryant University field hockey team closed out the weekend with a hard fought, 3-0, loss at Albany Sunday afternoon.
The Bulldogs (0-2) closed out a tough opening weekend with against a very talented Albany team, which improves to 2-0 on the season.
Despite not being able to get on the board, the Bryant backline, highlighted by senior goalkeeper Megan Hancock's (Skowhegan, Maine) season-high 11 saves, allowed the Great Danes just a single goal in the first 62 minutes of play on Sunday.
After a scoreless first 10 minutes of action, Fiori Van Rijswijk broke the tie with a tip in from Echco Bretz and Pihila Arnold at the 11:26 mark. Despite being outshot 18-3 (28-4 in the game) in the first half, the Black and Gold took Albany to the locker room down just the single goal.
Bryant continued to hold strong for the first 20+ minutes of the second half until Paula Heuser put home the Great Dane's second of the afternoon at the 62:17 mark. In the final two minutes of play, Molly Mariano put home Albany's third of the game to secure the 3-0 victory.
Senior forward Rosie Bird (Hamilton, New Zealand) accounted for three of the Bulldogs' four shots, while sophomore defender Samantha Yoder (Mount Joy, Pa.) made her second-career defensive save.
Bryant will look to pick up its first win of the young 2014 season when it visits Harvard on Friday in a primetime showdown with the Crimson (6:00 p.m.).
