Starks, Ware lead Bulldogs past Army, 80-73, on road

Box Score

WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Bryant University men's basketball team saw new career highs set by a pair of underclassmen while scoring its highest point total of the season, topping Army, 80-73, Tuesday night at Christl Arena in the team's first road win of the 2014-15 campaign.

Freshman guard Hunter Ware (Powder Springs, Ga.) posted a career high for the second-consecutive game with 17 points, going 5-for-10 from the floor with a trio of triples, while sophomore forward Andrew Scocca (Melrose, Mass.) scored 11 with a pair of blocks and a team-leading seven rebounds for the Bulldogs (2-5). Senior guard Dyami Starks (Duluth, Minn.) dropped in a game-best 23 points, converting 8-of-17 from the floor with three treys of his own to compliment a block and a steal. Sophomore forward Dan Garvin (Bethel, Conn.) (6 rebounds) and senior guard Joe O'Shea (Burlington, Vt.) (2 assists, 2 steals) each contributed 10 points as well, marking the first time this season five Bulldogs have finished in double-digit scoring.

Kyle Wilson scored 19 to lead the Black Knights (6-2), who suffered just their second loss of the season at the hands of the visiting Bulldogs. Fifteen of Wilson's 19 points came in the second frame, including a pair of 3-pointers in the final 90 seconds to pull the home side back within six inside the final 30 seconds. Kevin Ferguson picked up the only double-double of the day, chipping in 15 points on 7-of-8 shooting with a game-high 11 rebounds, while Dylan Cox added 14 with a game-best seven assists (2 steals, 1 block). Tanner Plomb capped off Army's double-figure scorers with 12 points, going 10-for-12 from the line and just 1-of-7 from the field.

The Bulldogs controlled the pace of play through much of the first half, forcing eight Army turnovers and grabbing five steals in the opening 20 minutes alone. Starting off with a 5-0 edge, the Bulldogs doubled up their hosts by the 9:37 mark, 25-12, thanks in part to a pair of threes from Ware.

A 10-3 Army spurt closed that gap to 28-22 with six minutes to go, and the Black Knights would pull within a single possession with 3:04 left in the frame, 34-31, thanks to a converted three-point play from Cox. But the points would be the last of the half for Army, as Bryant held its host scoreless through the final three minutes while scoring eight unanswered points for a 42-31 halftime lead.

The Black Knights wouldn't make up any ground to open the second, as the Bulldogs built their lead to 18 points, 58-40, with 12:48 left in the game on a jumper in the paint from Ware. A three-point play from Scocca put the Bulldogs up 15, 61-46, at the midway point of the second half, and Bryant took its largest lead of the game, 68-48, on a Starks jumper with 7:13 left on the clock.

But Army wasn't out of it just yet, exploding for a 22-9 run from there that brought the clock down to just 38 seconds and closed the margin to single digits for the first time in the half, 77-70. After making four-straight free throws, Ware would commit a costly turnover with 26 seconds to go, and Wilson made him pay with a corner three to cut the lead to 79-73. But the Bulldogs would make the final point of the night on a Scocca free throw to hold on for the seven-point victory.

Both teams shot 50 percent or better on the day, with the Bulldogs hitting an even 28-of-56 (.500) and Army draining 27-of-53 from the floor (.509). Bryant paced the match on the glass for just the second time this season, 32-27.

The Bulldogs will take the next 11 days off for final exams before traveling to Colorado for their next matchup, a Dec. 21 meeting with first-time opponent the University of Denver (1 p.m. MT).
