WOMEN'S SOCCER DROPS TOUGH-ONE TO MAINE, 1-0, SUNDAY AT BULLDOG STADIUM

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – Despite outshooting their opponents for the second-straight contest, the Bryant University women's soccer team dropped its home opener, 1-0, to the University of Maine Sunday afternoon.

After falling to Hartford on Friday on a last-minute goal, the Bulldogs drop their second consecutive single-score match to open the 2013 season, while the Black Bears improve to 2-0 on the year.

Just over 10 minutes into the opening half, Maine's Joanie L'Abbe advanced the ball in the Bryant defensive third. The sophomore defender lofted a cross into the bottom corner of the box where Camille Varin-Tremblay collected the pass, sneaking a shot past an outstretched Kaylan Conrad (Avon, Conn.) for the lone marker of the afternoon.

The Bulldogs had plenty of opportunities however, including three good looks from senior forward Shana Follette (Plymouth, Mass.). Follette fired a pair of strikes in the opening minutes, sending one off the crossbar, before nearly evening the score in the 71st minute on a beautiful shot from inside the box.

Overall the Black and Gold outshot the Black Bears, 10-8, led by five attempts from Follette and a pair from junior midfielder Katy Biagi (Natick, Mass.).

Maine's Lauren Swant improved to 2-0 on the year, picking up three saves in her second-straight shutout, while Conrad stopped three Black Bear attempts herself in her second start as a Bulldog.

Bryant will have a few days of practice before returning to action Friday night when they head to Rider for a 5 p.m. showdown with the Broncs.
