SMITHFIELD, R.I. – Senior midfielder Olivia Jankins (West Brookfield, Mass.) broke a scoreless tie at the 61:10 mark with her sixth score of the season to lift the Bryant University field hockey team to a 1-0 win over Sacred Heart on Sunday.
On a windy day in Smithfield in which the Bulldogs celebrated the careers of five of the best to ever don the Black and Gold, Bryant pulled out a quality win to finish at 4-2 overall in the MAAC. Just over 61 minutes into the contest, the Bulldogs earned a penalty corner, one of 11 on the afternoon. Off the corner, junior forward Rosie Bird (Hamilton, New Zealand) possessed the ball at the top of the arc before setting up Jankins for a strike from just inside the circle.
Senior goalkeeper Megan Hancock (Skowhegan, Maine) made five saves in her fifth career shutout, while Pioneer netminder Mary Altpeter stopped four Bulldog chances.
The win pushes Bryant's win total to 11 games, one of the many program records set by the Bulldogs this season.
With the regular season in the books, the Black and Gold can set their sights on continuing this historic season in the MAAC Tournament which kicks off Friday in Lawrenceville, N.J. Sunday's victory, along with Robert Morris's win over Monmouth, solidifies the #3 seed for the Bulldogs.
On Friday, Bryant will square off with #2 Quinnipiac at 3 p.m. in Lawrenceville for a chance to play the winner of #1 Rider vs. #4 Robert Morris on Saturday. The Bulldogs will have the opportunity to win their first ever Division I postseason contest.
