SMITHFIELD, R.I. – Despite three strong wins at singles, including a big victory at the No. 1 spot by sophomore Claudia Hidalgo (Guayaquil, Ecuador), the Bryant University women's tennis team fell to Northeast Conference rival Quinnipiac, 4-3, Saturday afternoon in Hamden, Conn.
Hidalgo first teamed up with senior Katie Francazio (Cranston, R.I.) to claim third doubles with an 8-4 win over the team of Lisanne Steinart and Lavinia Cristescu but the Bobcats edged out the Bulldogs at the first and second slots to pick up the early point, which proved to be the deciding factor.
In singles play, Hidalgo knocked off Rachael Cantor in straight sets 6-2, 6-1 for an impressive victory at the top spot. Valeria Couto Cuervo (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico) went on to down Steinart 6-2, 6-4 at No. 5 singles while Irma Rodriguez (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico) claimed sixth singles as she defeated Cristescu by a 7-6 (4), 6-3 decision.
The Black and Gold look to bounce back on Saturday, April 2 when the welcome Albany to Smithfield, R.I. for a match at 11:00 a.m.
