SMITHFIELD, R.I. – The Bryant University women's tennis team opened spring competition with pair of losses over the weekend, dropping matches to Army and Massachusetts, 7-0, on the campus of the United States Military Academy.
On Saturday against Army, the doubles tandem of Irma Rodriguez (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico) and Jessica Vickers (Montrose, Colo.) put up a fight at the third spot but fell to Audrey Hansen and Kari Pope, 8-5. Valeria Couto-Cuervo (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico) turned in the best performance in singles play in a 6-3, 6-2 loss to Robie Verano at the fifth slot.
On Sunday against UMass, Vickers looked strong in the first set in No. 4 singles against Katelyn Carpenter but ultimately fell, 7-6, 6-0, 10-6. In another close match at the top spot, Claudia Hidalgo (Guayaquil, Ecuador) dropped a tight match to Yuliana Motyl, 6-4, 7-5.
The Black and Gold look to rebound on Friday, Feb. 26 when they play Akron on the campus of Brown University.
