BRYANT WOMEN'S TENNIS EVENS RECORD WITH 5-2 WIN OVER
PROVIDENCE
BOX SCORE
SMITHFIELD, RI – Bryant University freshman
Jessica May Vickers (Montrose, Colo.) earned a
straight-set win at No. 4 singles in what would prove to be the
deciding match giving the host Bulldogs a 5-2 win over visiting
Providence College Wednesday afternoon at the Bryant Tennis
Complex.
Bryant (1-1) dropped the doubles point to the Friars to open the
match with the team of Valeria Couto-Cuervo (Guaynabo,
Puerto Rico) and Stephanie Smyers
(Pittsburgh, Pa.) earning an 8-2 win at No. 2 doubles.
But in singles play, the Bulldogs came out strong, winning five
of six matches to even their record to 1-1 on the year.
Sophomore Claudia Hidalgo
(Guayaquil, Ecuador) and Smyers were both leading their
match before winning by default, but the play of Vickers,
Couto-Cuervo and Katie Francazio (Cranston, R.I.)
gave the Bulldogs a strong lift needed to pick up the win.
Couto-Cuervo earned a 6-1, 6-3 win over Melissa Ferry at No. 5
singles while fellow senior Francazio turned in a fine performance
with a 6-4, 6-0 win over Courtney Fuller at No. 6 setting up the
deciding match at No. 4 by Vickers.
Bryant will travel to West Point, N.Y. this weekend for the
Eastern Intercollegiate Championships.
