BRYANT MEN'S SOCCER WINS SECOND-STRAIGHT AFTER OVERTIME
THRILLER AGAINST ARMY
WEST POINT, N.Y. – Bryant University men's soccer moved to
2-2 on the season after a double overtime goal by sophomore
midfielder Angelo Caputi
(Guayaquil, Ecuador) in the 105th minute of
play against The United States Military Academy Wednesday
night.
Army (0-5) started fast out of the gate, registering seven shots
to Bryant's two in the first half. The Bulldogs were able to
counter the Army attack with four corner kicks in the first half
alone, keeping things at 0-0 going into half.
Both teams came out of the break on the offensive as the
Bulldogs recorded five shots in the second period compared to
Army's 11. The Black and Gold stepped up defensively and
shutout the Army attack though the first ninety minutes of
play.
Victor Tutino (Deer
Park, N.Y.) led the Bulldogs defense with four saves in
the second half alone. The senior keeper had a season- high six
saves and tallied his second shutout of the young season. The
New York native played big in net for the Bulldogs, making several
key saves at point blank range to keep the Cadets off the board
late in the second half.
Coach Purcell's club was able to force overtime and took
advantage of the extra time in which they registered two shots to
Army's none.
Midway through the second overtime at the 105th
minute, Captui headed the ball to the back of the net after a
scramble for possession took place in front of the goalkeeper,
giving Bryant a 1-0 victory and its second straight win in
2010.
The Bulldogs saw strong offensive production from junior
midfielder Jordan Martin
(Bristol, Conn.) who recorded two shots in the outing and
fellow teammate Ethan Freidman (Massapequa Park,
N.Y.) tallied two shots including one on net. Caputi
finished the contest with three shots and his first goal of the
2010 season.
The Bulldogs return to the pitch Sunday September
19th at Stony Brook at 1 p.m. Bryant fell to Stony
Brook in the last meeting 3-0 in 2009, but look to go for its
third-straight win after starting the season 0-2.
