Bulldogs Seek Third Win of 2010 Season Against Warriors

SMITHFIELD, R.I. - Bryant University (2-0) will conclude its
non-conference schedule against a familiar opponent when
Northeast-10 Conference member Merrimack College visits Bulldog
Stadium Saturday for the 11th meeting between the two programs.
The Warriors (0-1) come to Smithfield leading the all-time
series, 6-4, having won six of the first seven meetings. The
Bulldogs won the last matchup, 20-7, in 2008 on Homecoming Weekend,
and have not lost to the Warriors since the 2005 campaign.
The Black and Gold have not started a season 3-0 since 2007,
when the team finished 8-3 overall with an NCAA Division II playoff
appearance.
The Bulldogs come into the matchup after defeating Saint
Anselm 44-21 in Week 2. Coach Marty Fine's squad rushed for 184
yards and five touchdowns on just 43 carries. Sophomore Jordan
Brown led the unit with a strong ground game, rushing
for a contest-high 118 yards on 14 attempts and running in three
touchdowns.
The Bulldogs defense stepped up big and forced three
interceptions in the contest. Junior defensive back Samad
Wagstaff was all over the playing field, recording six
tackles, one pass break-up and two interceptions. Wagstaff picked
off a Saint Anselm pass in the second quarter for a 53-yard
touchdown return, giving the Bulldogs a 27-0 lead. His two
interceptions tied a Bryant all-time single-game record while
recording the fourth-longest interception return in Bulldog
history.
Merrimack enters Saturday's game 0-1 after a season
opening loss on September 4th. The Warriors racked up 366
yards of total offense against fellow Division II member Slippery
Rock University and accumulated 22 first downs in a Week 1
loss.
Coach John Perry's club fell to in an early 17-0 deficit
and would not be able to overcome the rushing attack from Slippery
attack which tallied 277 yards on the ground in the
contest.
