BRYANT WOMEN'S SOCCER FALLS TO CROSS-TOWN RIVAL PROVIDENCE
2-0
SMITHFIELD, R.I. – The Bryant University Women's
soccer team dropped to 2-4 on the season after a 2-0 home loss to
Providence College Sunday afternoon at Sutton Field. The
Bulldogs registered four shots on net but it would not
be enough to overcome the six shots on goal by the Friars.
Providence opened the match strong recording four shots
including one on goal but could not break the Bulldogs defense.
Steph Del
Mistro (East Williston, N.Y.) led the Bryant back line
winning several one-on-one battles early in the first half to keep
things at 0-0.
The Black and Gold held off the Friars attack until the
44th minute when Friar Midfielder Amanda Weber managed
to sneak the ball past Bryant keeper Kelsi Jacob (Mahwah,
N.J.) to open the scoring.
Jacob tallied four stops on the afternoon including a leaping
save against a Lindsey Trubia shot in the 27th
minute. Trubia fired a shot from the top of the box and Jacob
was able to elevate and deflect the ball off the cross bar to keep
the Bulldogs within one.
The Bulldogs opened the second half with a prime scoring
opportunity when defender Elizabeth
Guimond (Claremont, N.H) had a shot from head-on but
the Friar keeper was able to engulf the strike. The
Providence keepers registered four saves combined in the
contest.
Following a Bryant yellow card, Providence was back on the
attack as forward Stephanie Leonard connected for the Friar's
second goal of the game at the 75th minute.
Coach Chris Flint's squad was outshot 14-6 in
the game and only had four corner kicks compared to five for the
Friars.
The Bulldogs will return to the pitch Wednesday Sept. 15, for a
home game against Holy Cross at 7:00 p.m.
