BULLDOG VOLLEYBALL PICKS UP
PAIR OF WINS IN HAMPTON INVITATIONAL, TOPS HOST HAMPTON, 3-0, AND
WOFFORD, 3-1

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – Juniors Maria Scocca
(Melrose, Mass.) and Jazmin Stoner
(Durango, Colo.) each recorded 19 kills while a trio of
Bulldogs collected double-doubles in a pair of wins Friday
afternoon, as the Bryant University volleyball team topped Hampton,
3-0, and Wofford, 3-1, in the first day of 2010 action.
Newcomer Kendall Gaffney
(Colorado Springs, Colo.) also had a big day for the
Bulldogs (2-0), collecting 17 kills – including a match-high
12 against Wofford – in her first day of collegiate
action.
Bryant needed just one extra game to get the pair of wins, and
started out the day with a three-set win over tournament host
Hampton University, 25-21, 27-25 and 25-18.
Stoner's nine kills were a game high while Scocca chipped in
eight kills and six blocks, five of them solo, in the victory.
Sophomore Macy Mitravich
(Waimanalo, Hawaii) recorded a match-best 14 digs in the
season opener.
A quintet of Bulldogs had big outings in the second match of the
day, won by Bryant in four sets, despite dropping the first, 22-25
(25-18, 25-19, 25-22). Stoner (10 kills, 12 digs), Gaffney (12k,
12d) and sophomore Jadith Lorenzo
(Lawrence, Mass.) (37 assists, 11 digs) recorded the first
double-doubles of the year against Wofford (0-1), while Scocca and
Mitravich added 11 kills and 17 digs, respectively.
Lorenzo's 37 assists were also a match high. On the day, the
team featured a .198 hitting percentage with nine aces, but were
outblocked by its opponents, 14-11.
The Bulldogs look to close out tournament action Saturday with
another set of victories, and will take on Towson (9 a.m.) and
South Carolina State (11 a.m.).
