BRYANT WOMEN'S SOCCER FALLS
TO NORTHEASTERN, 3-0
SMITHFIELD, R.I. – Northeastern University jumped out to
an early lead and kept up the balanced offensive attack as they
defeated the Bryant University women's soccer team, 3-0 on Friday
afternoon. This was the first win for the Huskies on the season as
they improved to 1-1 overall while the Bulldogs dropped to 0-2.
After a few quick shots to start the game, Northeastern opened
the scoring in the 14th minute as Devin Petta broke
the Bulldog defense and hit the back right corner of the net to
give the Huskies an early advantage.
The best chance for the Bulldogs came midway through the first
half during a series of three corner kicks. On the last attempt,
senior defender Sarah Donovan
(Storrs, Conn.) connected for a header but missed just
wide of the goal.
With less than two minutes remaining in the first half, senior
Gabbi Jatkola maneuvered her way in front of the net and eluded a
swarm of defenders long enough to tuck it past the dive of Bryant
keeper Kelsi Jacob (Mahwah,
N.J.).
The final Northeastern tally was made in the 56th
minute as sophomore Greta Samuelsdottir scored on a feed from
Veronica Napoli.
Bryant had another scoring opportunity on a late corner kick but
the header by Carolyn Giuliano
(Wethersfield, Conn.) was saved by Northeastern keeper
Michelle Sopko.
The Bryant University women's soccer team looks to rebound in
one week when it travels to play NJIT on Friday, Sept. 3 at 7:00
