WOMEN'S TENNIS
DEFEATS HOLY CROSS 4-3 ON TUESDAY AFTERNOON

SMITHFIELD, R.I. –Taking four out of six singles matches
on Tuesday afternoon, the Bryant University women's tennis
team has now won two dual matches in a row as it defeated Holy
Cross, 4-3, at the Bryant Tennis Complex.
After dropping two out of three doubles matches to give Holy
Cross the lone doubles point, Bryant's No. 1 and No. 2
singles players won their matches in convincing fashion.
Freshman Claudia Hidalgo (Guayaquil, Ecuador)
won in the No. 1 singles slot in straight sets, 6-1 and 6-0. Junior
Valeria Couto Cuervo (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico)
dismantled Holy Cross' Carolyn Chandley in similar fashion,
defeating her 6-1 and 6-0 as well. Hidalgo and Couto Cuervo also
teamed up for the lone Bulldog win in the doubles matches by a
margin of 8-4.
Emily Marr of the Crusaders was able to take the No. 3 singles
match. After falling behind 3-0 in her match, Bryant junior
Morganne Downing (Cherry Hills Village, Colo.)
retired due to injury to even the score at two apiece.
The Bulldogs went on to win two of the last three singles
matches to earn their second consecutive victory.
Bryant's Katie Francazio (Cranston, R.I.)
defeated Hailee Lange in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1 in the No. 4
singles position while senior Chelsea Downing (Cherry Hills
Village, Colo.) defeated Holy Cross' Kathryn Wilkie
6-3, 6-2 in the No. 6 slot.
The Bulldogs wrap up their season Wednesday at the Bryant Tennis
Complex when they take on Hartford at 2 p.m. Tomorrow is also
Campus Kids' Day for the women's tennis team. For more
