MEN'S AND WOMEN'S SWIMMING SWEEP FALCONS FOR SECOND STRAIGHT
YEAR
SMITHFIELD, RI- The Bryant University men's and women's swim
teams took down the Bentley Falcons by scores of 113-92 on the
men's side and 106-91 on the women's side. The wins were the first
as this season for both teams, as they each improve to 1-3 and earn
their first victories as a Division I program.
The men were led by strong efforts by Tom Ferrigno (West
Chester, Penn.) and Steven Nguyen (San Jose,
California), as each put up times that will qualify them
for the ECAC championships at the end of the season. Ferrigno swam
a 10:33.01 in the 1,000 yard freestyle to take down first place,
with freshman Zach Bowen (Linchefield, N.H.) right
behind him, giving the Bulldogs a huge boost to start the meet.
Ferrigno would also win the 200 yard individual medley.
Nguyen broke the school record in the 100 yard butterfly with a
time of 54.47 to win the even with Bowen, once again, finishing
second. Nguyen then went on to win the 500 yard freestyle later in
the meet, along with the 200 yard freestyle.
The sprinters also pitched in with a big one, two finish in the
50 yard freestyle by Mike Gilligan (Cheshire,
Conn.) and Ray Savner (Bethlehem, Conn.).
Gilligan came out later and won a very close race over Bentley's
top sprinter Sam Laden in the 100 yard freestyle.
The Bulldogs would go on to have a first place finish in all but
three events on the day. Nguyen would finish with three wins, while
Ferrigno and Gilligan finished with two. The 400 freestyle relay
team featuring Bowen, Savner, Gilligan and Kevin McDonald
(North Haven, Conn.) would also finish in first with a
time of 3:22.37.
The women's side received another record breaking performance in
the 100 butterfly from freshman Abby Whittaker (Salisbury,
Mass.), winning the event with a time of 1:01.89. The
women overall had an outstanding performance, having top times in
eight out of the eleven total events.
The squad started off the meet with a big win in the 400 yard
medley relay with the team of Whittaker, Jess Looney
(Goffstown, N.H.), Lisa Zanchi (North Reading,
Mass.) and Julie Moran (Framingham,
Mass.). Looney would win two other events including the
100 yard backstroke and 200 yard individual medley.
A pair of one, two, three finishes early in the meet really
helped the Bulldogs put some distance between themselves and the
falcons. First, Amy D'Olympia (Mattapoisett,
Mass.), Moran and Dayna Konko (Staten Island,
N.Y.) took down first, second and third respectively in
the 50 yard freestyle. The trio of Looney, Margaret
Dickinson (West Newbury, Mass.) and Zanchi would repeat
the feet in the very next event, the 200 individual medley.
Jill Hira (Cheshire, Conn.) also had a good
meet, winning the 200 yard freestyle and recording the top time in
the 500 yard freestyle.
The Bulldogs will be back in action next Saturday when they
travel to Providence College to take on the Friars (1 p.m.)
