OAKDALE, NY - Sophomore Julie Geonnotti (St. Louis Park,
Minn.) had 19 kills while Likica Grceva (Natick,
Mass.) and Adrienne Boss (Dracut, Mass.)
added 17 and 15 kills respectively to lead the Bryant University
women's volleyball team to a thrilling 3-2 come-from-behind win
over Adelphi in an NCAA Northeast quarterfinal round match Thursday
evening.
Bryant (31-12), the No. 2 seed of the regional and making its
10th NCAA appearance, won the opening game 30-22, but
dropped the next two games to the Panthers, the No. 7 seed, 31-29,
30-26. But the Bulldogs did not panic and in fact, managed to
regain the momentum back from the Panthers in the fourth game,
setting the tone for remainder of the match.
Bryant raced out to 10-5 lead thank to a kill from Geonnotti and
a service ace from Maureen Atkins (Fenton, MO).
Two more errors by the Panthers stretched Bryant's lead to 12-6 and
the Bulldogs would cruise from there. A Boss kill would close
it out for the Bulldogs, 30-21, sending the match to a fifth game
to decide an outcome.
For Bryant, that was certainly good news. The Bulldogs had
won four straight five-game matches coming into the match and owned
a 4-1 on the season. The experience paid off as Bryant
trailed 8-6 at the changeover and fell being 11-9 following a kill
from Brittany Addeo (Minden, NV).
But the Bulldogs would regroup, battling back to tie the
match 12-12 behind three strong serves from Atkins and after an
attack error from Kathleen Creegan (North Bellore, NY) pushed the
Bulldogs to match point, Morgan Wood (Cedar Park,
TX) put it away with a kill down the middle.
Bryant will advance to face New Haven, the third seed, in a
semifinal match on Friday at 5 p.m. New Haven defeated CW
Post, 3-0 in the first match of the day. Matches to
take place this evening include Bentley vs. Georgian Court and top
seed Dowling taking on Merrimack.
Adelphi (27-7) was led by Carney's match-high 21 kills while
Lauren Flanagan (Boulder, Colo.) added 16 kills. The Panthers
were making their first NCAA appearance.
Bryant hit .218 for the match and got 55 assists from senior
setter Tiffany Garry (Frankfort, IL) who also
added six kills and nine digs. Boss, a freshman middle, hit
.423 to go with a pair of blocks. Atkins finished the match
with 27 digs while teammate Delia Glover (Marston Mills,
MA) added 22 defensive digs for the Bulldogs.
