SMITHFIELD, RI - The Bryant men's soccer season came to a
close Sunday evening as the Bulldogs dropped a heartbreaker to
UMass Lowell in the Northeast-10 Conference Quarterfinals.
After both teams were tied 1-1 at the end of regulation and two
overtime periods, it was the River Hawks earning the right to
advance to the semifinals on penalty kicks.
Bryant matched UMass Lowell by converting the first three
penalty shot attempts. Following a made attempt by UML's
Brendan Horne, Norbert Guery's attempt was saved by Ryan
Richards. Following the miss, UML's Edens Chery was able to
beat Bryant goalie Tom Madden for the winner.
The Bulldogs were the first to strike in the early going.
Mike Gargiulo sent in a nice cross inside the box where it found
Manny Rodriguez who tapped it past Richards to put the Bulldogs up
1-0 just 30 seconds in the game.
UMass Lowell would answer as Chery sent a ball from near
midfield to Matt Dubois who was able to beat Madden for the
equalizer in the eighth minute.
