SMITHFIELD, RI - Kyle Tierney's (Westborough,
Mass.) goal in the 61st minute broke a 1-1 tie and proved
to be the game-winner as the Bryant men's soccer team held on for a
2-1 win over Assumption College at a chilly Bryant Turf Complex
Tuesday night. With the win, Bryant improves to 10-6 overall
and 6-6 in the NE-10. Assumption drops to 4-9-3 (3-7-2
NE-10).
In a hard-fought game that saw a total of 35 fouls whistled, the
Bulldogs got on the board first as Matthew Brown (South
Easton, Mass.) picked up a rebound from a shot by Tierney
that was saved by Assumption goalie Brandon Sullivan
(Halesite, NY) and the Bulldog junior tapped it in for his
fifth goal of the season.
Assumption picked up the pace and the pressure paid off as the
Greyhounds got the equalizer when Joe Drain (Milton,
Mass.) scored just before halftime following a corner
kick. The goal sent both team tied at 1-1 into the locker
room at the break.
The teams continued to play hard well into the second
half. Following a Greyhound foul, senior standout
Nick Balistrieri (Glastonbury, Conn.) who was
honored along with Tierney before the game as part of senior day,
set up his classmate perfectly in the box for the game-winner, his
second of the season.
Prior to the start of the game, Bryant honored seniors
Balistrieri, Tierney,
Thomas Madden (Saco, Maine), Connor Bryant
(Tinton Falls, RI), Mike Gargiulo (North Branford,
Conn.), Stephen Marcus (Farmingdale, NY)
as part of Senior Day festivities.
The Bulldogs travel to AIC on Saturday.
