Smithfield, R.I.
- The Bryant University Field Hockey team saw its
three game winning streak snapped Wednesday afternoon, at the hands
of the third-ranked Bentley Falcons, who defeated the Bulldogs 2-0
under sunny skies at the Bryant Turf Complex.
Bryant fired 11 shots against freshman goaltender Alyssa Sliney,
but could not put one past her. Sliney has not allowed a goal in
her last298 minutes.
The Falcons scored just 1:19 into the match, when Kate Bruden
pulled the ball out of a scramble in front of Bulldog goaltender
Kundayi Mawema (Hare, Zimbabwe) and fired it past
into the net. They made it 2-0 in the 51st minute
when Heather Buda redirected Amanda Deppe's shot past Mawema.
Bryant had plenty of chances, including eight penalty corners in
the second half, but could not convert. Their best chance came with
22 minutes to go, when the Bulldogs received three consecutive
corners, but Shana Libman (Attleboro, Mass.) was
robbed by Silney.
Libman led the Bulldogs with five shots, while Laynie
Sadler (Rehoboth, Mass.) and Courtney O'Brien
(Tewksbury, Mass.) fired two shots each.
Mawema kept the Bulldogs in the game throughout, stopping ten
shots.
The Bulldogs (3-4, 3-2 NE-10) visit ninth-ranked St. Michaels
Saturday (1
p.m.).
