Smithfield, R.I.
- The Bryant University Field Hockey team made a
statement Saturday night defeating seventh-ranked UMass-Lowell 3-1
in frigid conditions at the Bulldog Turf Complex Saturday night.
Courtney O'Brien (Tewksbury, Mass.) got the
scoring started in the 12th minute, scoring off a corner
play, with Caitlan Johnson (Walpole, Mass.)
getting the assist. It was O'Brien's second goal in as many games.
The Bulldogs maintained a high-pressure level throughout the
contest and broke through for a second goal in the 50th
minute when Laynie Sadler (Rehoboth, Mass.) got
the ball out of a scramble in front of River Hawks goaltender
Nicole Staiti and put it in the net for her 10th tally.
Michaela Dwyer (Buskirk, N.Y.) put the game
away 11-minutes later scoring off another corner play. It was
Dwyer's third and assisted by Kristin Tighe (North Easton,
Mass.).
Sara Hohenberger spoiled Kundayi Mawema's (Hare,
Zimbabwe) shutout with just five minutes to play. Mawema
was sharp all night stopping ten shots.
The Bulldogs (9-7, 8-5 NE-10) will look to make it three in a
row when they host C.W. Post Monday (3:30 p.m.).
