Bryan Molk's (Peabody, MA) unassisted goal 1:19 into overtime lifted Bryant University to a 9-8 victory over Southern New Hampshire University here tonight in men's lacrosse action. Bryant, which is ranked 10th nationally among Division II school, snapped a three-game losing streak and improved to 4-4 overall and 3-2 in the Northeast-10 Conference. SNHU dropped to 1-5 overall and 1-3 in the league.
Neither team led by more than one goal until the Penmen struck for three unanswered goals late in the third quarter and took 8-5 lead into the fourth quarter. Bryant cut the lead to 8-6 when sophomore Adam Smith (Brainbridge Island, WA) scored just 1:29 in the fourth quarter and the score remained that way until Molk netted the first of his two goals in the game with 2:04 to play. The Bulldogs forced the overtime when senior Andrew Serge (Albany, NY) scored an unassisted goal with 57 seconds left in regulation.
SNHU controlled the faceoff in overtime and caught a break when Bryant was called for a one-minute penalty just 11 seconds into overtime. SNHU did not get a shot at goal attempt during the man-up situation and Molk netted the game-winner just 11 seconds after the penalty expired.
Serge led the Bulldogs with three goals, while Molk finished with two goals and one assist. Junior Mike Hart (South Hadley, MA) paced the Penmen with three goals, while sophomore Jon Habel (Hingham, MA) totaled a goal and three assists.
Freshman Mike Kennedy (Port Jefferson, NY) started in net for the Bulldogs and stopped six shots over the first three quarters. Senior Matt Lovejoy (Thornton, PA) closed out the game in net for Bryant and recorded one save. Sophomore Matt Palladino (Hingham, MA) went the distance in goal for the Penmen and stopped 12 shots.
Bryant will square off against third-ranked Mercyhurst College in a non-league tilt on Saturday.
