Championship Bound; Bryant advances to America East title game off Russell’s GWG in Overtime

SMITHFIELD, R.I.- Brian Russell scored a game-winning wrap-around goal just 41 seconds into overtime to lift the top-seeded Bryant men's lacrosse team to a 10-9 victory over fourth-seeded Binghamton in the America East Semifinals on Thursday afternoon at Beirne Stadium.

With the win, the Black and Gold improve to 10-4 overall and have clinched a spot in the America East Championship. Bryant advances to its second conference title game in three years and will take on the No.3 seeded UAlbany, a 9-7 victor over No. 2 seed UMBC in Thursday's second semifinal, in the America East Championship game on Saturday, May 3. Brian Russell led the team in scoring finishing with four goals on the day, including the game winner. Dawson Rielly recorded his ninth hat trick of the season, finishing with three goals against the Bearcats. Jack Lonsinger (2g) and John Tomsheck (2a) both had multi-point performances.


Scott Einarson registered 13 saves in a strong showing in cage  while allowing 11 goals. JJ Murphy led the Black and Gold at the face-off X, winning 12-of-21 draws and scooping six ground balls.


Drew Lucas caused two turnovers, moving him to just one CT away from tying the Division I career record of 85 (Matt Murnane, 2009-10). Lucas also led non-face-off specialists in ground balls with four and added an assist to his stat sheet. Luke Mead, Jack Lonsinger, and Spencer Clark all caused turnovers in the victory.

  • JJ Murphy gave Bryant possession after winning the opening face-off of OT and allowing  Gabe Chinitz to scoop the ground ball.

How it Happened
  • Jack Lonsinger got the Bulldogs on the board first after scampering towards the crease from the right side and scoring from point-black range at the 13:00 mark of the first quarter.
  • Brian Russell raced from the back X and side-armed a shot around Binghamton's Paolo Capucciati at 10:25, putting Bryant ahead 2-0.
  • Russell sprinted to his left from behind the cage and bounced home his second goal of the day 4:40.
  • Binghamton's Liam Ferris broke the shutout after scoring an unassisted goal 3:58 left in the opening quarter.
  • Bearcat LSM Nolan Sharkey scored his third goal of the year at 13:55 in the second quarter, following a Bryant turnover at midfield. Ferris would be credited with the assist.
  • Patrick Walsh created space on the wing after putting a spin move on Binghamton's Eoin MacKay and wired home a shot at 13:18 in the second.
  • Spencer Clark assisted Russell in transition to complete his first half hat trick with 5:56 remaining in the second quarter.
