Smithfield, RI
- The Bryant University women's basketball team welcomed
Saginaw Valley State of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic
Conference, to the Chace Athletic Center for a non-conference
match. In the first ever meeting between these two teams, they will
both remember this thrilling double overtime game that saw the lead
change 24 times. The Bulldogs would get the one point victory 87-86
over Saginaw Valley. Bryant improves to 3-5 and the Cardinals drop
to 2-7.
On a career setting day for most of the Bulldogs, they had four
players score in double figures led by senior Megan
Peper (Castleton, NY) with a career high 23 points and 12
rebounds. Junior Joanna Skiba (Providence, RI) had
a career high 13 assists.
In her first career start, freshman Alyssa
Michella (Washington, NJ) made the most of her
opportunity. She finished the game with her first career
double-double and career highs in both points and rebounds with 19
and 14 respectively.
The game was tight and went back and forth most of the way but the
Bulldogs went on an 11-4 run to close out the second half and send
it to overtime. Junior Erin Murphy (Albany, NY)
had 12 points that came at crucial moments in the game. She hit a
lay-up with just seven seconds remaining in regulation to tie the
game and sent it to overtime. Then she outdid herself in overtime
by making a game-tying jumper in the paint with just four seconds
on the clock to prolong the game. In the second overtime, Murphy
hit two big go ahead three pointers and help Bryant to the
victory.
Down one point with less than 10 seconds to play, Skiba was fouled
and given two free throws. She made both of them count and gave the
Bulldogs the one point lead and win.
The Cardinals had five players in double figures and three with
double-doubles. Sophomore guard Jenna Schroeder
(Clio, MI) had a game high 30 points and added 14 rebounds. Junior
Bernettra Grayer (Gary, IN) had 15 points and 12
rebounds to go along with her five blocks.
Bryant University will host St. Thomas Aquinas on Wednesday,
December 28 to kick off the annual Christmas Tournament at the
Chace Athletic Center.
