BRYANT FOOTBALL FALLS TO C.W. POST 37-15
Greg Daniel Records 16 Tackles To Tie School Record
BROOKVILLE, NY – C.W. Post senior quarterback Rob Blount
passed for 258 yards and added 123 yards rushing to lead the host
Pioneers to a 37-15 win over Bryant University on homecoming here
Saturday. With the win, C.W. Post improves to 4-1 overall,
4-0 in the Northeast-10 Conference. Bryant, led by Charles
Granatell's 143 yards passing, drops to 3-2 on the season
(3-2 NE-10).
The Pioneers came into the game ranked second nationally in
scoring, rushing and total offense, but the Bulldogs turned in a
solid defensive effort on the afternoon, led by La Salle graduate
Greg Daniel (right), keeping the vaunted Pioneer offense in check
for much of the game.
Trailing 10-0 in the first quarter, Bryant put together a 7-play
drive ending with a 25-yard touchdown pass by Granatell to junior
receiver Justin Kix who broke free in the end zone for
Bryant's first score. The extra point attempt failed,
but following a 12-yard touchdown pass from Blount to Jo-el
Kimaiyo, the Bulldogs answered once again as Sean Bergin connected
on a 21-yard field goal midway though the second quarter to pull
Bryant to within 17-9 at the half.
C.W. Post came into the game averaging 56 points per game, but
Bryant's defense led by Daniel and Andrew McLarty kept the
Bulldogs in the game. Daniel had 16 total tackles –
tying a school record in the game adding eight solo tackles and a
sack. McLarty and sophomore Chris Wohlheter had six tackles in the
game.
With the Bryant trailing 24-9 late in the third quarter, the
Bulldogs drove the length of the field to the C.W. Post 4 yard line
following three key passes to Sean Bergin accounting for 47 yards
on Bryant's possession. However, that was as far as the
Bulldogs would get as Lorenzo Perry was stopped on a third-down run
around the right side and Alex Chapparo was stopped short for no
gain on fourth-and-goal giving the ball back to the Pioneers.
Perry had 38 yards rushing on the day and caught six passes for
96 yards including a short screen pass from backup quarterback
James Hickey in the fourth and turning it into a 27-yard touchdown
to round out the scoring on the afternoon.
Bryant had 329 yards of total offense and turned the ball over
just once. C.W. Post, which travels to Bentley next Friday night,
had 559 yards of offense with freshman Anthony Lazarus having a
strong day with 117 yards rushing. The Pioneers were whistled for
10 penalties for 108 yards.
Bryant will return home to host Stonehill next Saturday at 1
p.m. at Bulldog Stadium.
