Mike Kelly enters his fifth season at Bryant University in2012-13 as a member of Tim O'Shea's coaching staff.
Before arriving on the Bryant campus, Kelly spent four years asan assistant coach at James Madison University (CAA) under headcoach Dean Keener. Prior to that, he spent three seasons at nearbyRhode Island College, where he served as head men’sbasketball coach from 2001-04. He also served as RIC's coordinatorof intramurals.
Kelly led Rhode Island College to an 11-15 overall record and a7-7 (fifth place) mark in the Little East Conference in 2003-04.His ’03-’04 freshman class formed the foundation forRIC's run to the NCAA Elite Eight three years later in 2006-07. The2003-04 freshman class included 1,000-point scorer andall-conference guard Kinsey Durgin and Kamari Williams.
Kelly led the Anchormen to an unbelievable turnaround in2002-03, taking a program that posted a 1-24 record the previousyear and improving it by 12 wins to finish the campaign with a13-13 mark, the best improvement in all of New England.
Before his stint at RIC, Kelly was spent two years as anassistant coach at Davidson College. With the Wildcats, Kelly wasresponsible for practice and game coaching, scouting of opponents,individual workouts and strength and conditioning, as well ascoordinating the film exchange program. He assisted in themonitoring of academics and was responsible for all basketballtravel and team functions. In addition, Kelly served as the campdirector for the Bob McKillop Basketball Camp.
Kelly also served as an assistant coach at Virginia Tech from1996-99. His duties included coordinating recruiting, monitoringthe team's academic progress, assisting in scouting and gamepreparation and the coordination of film exchange and editing.
Kelly began his coaching career in July 1993 at the U.S.Merchant Marine Academy as an assistant men's basketball coach, aposition he held until July of 1996. He was responsible for gameand practice coaching, as well as recruiting and scouting. Duringhis tenure at the USMMA, he also served as an admissions assistantand was the assistant equipment and facilities manager.
Kelly is an experienced basketball camp clinician and speaker,with basketball travels that include stops throughout Europe. Hehas coached and conducted camps in several countries, includingIreland, Belgium, Italy, Spain and France.
As an undergraduate, Kelly was a point guard for St. Joseph'sCollege (ME), leading his team to a district championship and berthin the NAIA National Tournament in 1992 and 1993. A 1993 graduateof St. Joseph’s, Kelly earned a bachelor's degree in businessadministration.
Kelly hails from Yarmouth, Mass. and currently resides inSmithfield, R.I. with his wife, Jill, their son, Ryan (7), andtheir daughter, Regan (5).
