NEWPORT, R.I. -- Bryant University men's tennis alum and Bryant Hall of Famer Matt Kuhar '19 (Smithfield, R.I.) will compete in the Hall of Fame Open at the Tennis Hall of Fame in Newport, R.I., July 6-13.
Kuhar will become the first Bryant tennis alum to compete in the Hall of Fame Open. The Smithfield native will compete in a qualifying match on July 6 at 11:00 a.m.
Regarded as one of the greatest tennis players in program history, Kuhar helped the Black and Gold win the last five of their six consecutive Northeast Conference Championships (2015-2019) and was enshrined in the Bryant Athletics Hall of Fame in 2019. Kuhar was named the NEC and USTA Rhode Island Player of the Year in each of his final three collegiate seaons, compiling a career singles record of 87-31.
Kuhar has posted a professional record of 95-68 and earned the highest ATP singles ranking of his career this season, No. 844.Â
Kuhar enjoyed an incredible high school career at Smithfield, posting a career record of 62-1 on his way to three Rhode Island singles titles. His success continued at Bryant where he 18-9 in singles, including a win over four-time NEC Player of the Year Arviz Berzins (FDU)Â on his way to NEC Rookie of the Year honors. An injury sidelined him for the 2016 title run but he returned to the courts in 2017 and proceeded to go 69-22 (.758 winning percentage) over his final three seasons. Kuhar was named NEC Player of the Year and USTA Rhode Island Player of the Year in all three seasons, receiving his USTA honors each year at Centre Court of the Hall of Fame Open.
As a fifth year, Kuhar cemeted himself as one of the greatest athletes to come through Bryant as he became the first player in NEC and Bryant history to earn a national ranking, rising as high as No. 77. He also teamed with Wilson Dong to become the first doubles team in league and school history to earn a national ranking, rising as high as No. 38. The duo would go on to become the first, and still the only, doubles team in NEC history to qualify for the NCAA Tournament.Â
