Bulldogs finish 2-1 in regular season weekend finale

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – The Bryant University men's tennis team went 2-1 over the weekend, including a 6-1 victory over NEC foe Sacred Heart to finish out the regular season.

VS. Boston U.

Seeking revenge from their 6-1 loss to the Bulldogs (10-13, 3-0 NEC) in February, the Terriers (8-15, 1-2 Patriot League) defeated Bryant, 5-2, on Friday in Smithfield, while the other half of the Bryant roster faced Quinnipiac.

The Black and Gold earned the first point of the match, winning at No. 1 and 2 doubles. Nick Lamart (Raleigh, N.C.) and Jorge Isaias Ortiz-Garcia (Trujillo Alto, Puerto Rico) were victorious at No. 1 doubles, 7-6, while Corey DiPaola (Lincoln, R.I.) and John Templeman (Midland, Mich.) teamed up to take down Mario Sandoval and Miguel Cepeda, 6-1, at No. 2 doubles.

Lucas Bombonatti defeated Andrew Quiros (Pembroke Pines, Fla.), 6-3, 6-3, at No. 1 singles, while Scott Plutt (Weston, Fla.) was topped, 6-3, 6-2, at No. 2 singles.

Freshman Anshumat Srivastava (Panta, India) scored the Bulldogs' only point in singles play in the sixth spot, taking down Cepeda, 1-6, 6-4, 10-4.

VS. Quinnipiac

The Bulldogs dominated the Bobcats (9-9, 4-1 MAAC), defeating the hosts, 7-0, on Friday. The Black and Gold earned the doubles point with wins at No. 2 and 3 doubles.

Matt Kuhar (Smithfield, R.I.) won, 6-1, 6-1, at No. 1 singles, while Luke Lorenz (Colorado Springs, Colo.) was victorious at No. 2 singles, 6-0, 6-4. Artur Jakubowski (Dallas, Texas) topped Kyle Alper, 3-6, 6-1, 10-6, at No. 3 singles. Guido Argentini (Boca Raton, Fla.) was also successful in three games, winning, 6-3, 3-6, 10-3, at No. 4 singles.

Michael Plutt (Weston, Fla.) won, 6-0, 6-1, at No. 5 singles, while Jorge Ortiz-Garcia (Trujillo Alto, Puerto Rico) won by default at No. 6 singles.

VS. Sacred Heart

The Bulldogs capped off the regular season with a 6-1 NEC victory over the Pioneers (3-14, 1-3 NEC). The Black and Gold swept the doubles point, convincingly winning, 6-2, at No. 1 doubles, 6-1, at two, and, 6-2, at three.

Kuhar defeated Cory Seltman at No. 1 singles, 6-0, 6-1. Lorenz was triumphant at No. 2 singles, 6-1, 6-3, and Jakubowksi at No. 3 singles, 6-4, 6-4. Argentini topped Bryan Einstoss, 6-4, 6-0, while Ortiz-Garcia was successful at No. 5 singles, 6-1, 6-2.

The Pioneers scored their only point at No. 6 singles, when Chris Sause took down Oliver Welsh (San Diego, Calif.), 6-3, 7-6.

The Bulldogs will await the conference tournament seeding which begins next Friday, April 21st.
