Women's Tennis sweeps Monmouth

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – The Bryant University women's tennis team took to the courts for their only home match of the fall season on Saturday and made the most of it, drubbing Monmouth University, 7-0, in a Northeast Conference showdown.

The Bulldogs (1-1) started the afternoon with a commanding goose-egg sweep in all three of their doubles matches before taking each of the six singles matchups played.  Bryant has participated in two dual matches so far this fall, and after completing a suspended match against Providence this Tuesday, they will have one more against Siena at the end of the month.

Juniors Claudia Hidalgo (Guayaquil, Ecuador) and Lucy Bird (Hamilton, New Zealand) opened up the day with an 8-0 romping over Nicole Lippens and Brooke Verdiglione before sophomores Stephanie Smyers (Pittsburgh, Pa.) and Marcela Brandao (Santo Andre, Brazil) duplicated those efforts against Liz D'Arcy and Sarah Turner.  Finally, sophomore May Vickers (Montrose, Colo.) and freshman Devlin-Ann Ammendola (Massapequa, N.Y.) wrapped up doubles play with an 8-0 victory over Dana Ferrari and Alyssa Teehan.

Moving onto singles play, Ammendola was the first to finish in the pack, earning a 6-0; 6-0 sweep of D'Arcy before Smyers did likewise against Turner.

In the battle of No. 1 singles, Hidalgo cruised to a 6-0; 6-1 win over Lippens, while sophomore Kahini Dalal (Mumbai, India) did likewise against Courtney Ciandella.

With the match clinched, the morning wrapped up with Bird taking down Verdiglione in the No. 2 singles matchup, 6-2; 6-2, before Vickers finished up the day with a 6-2; 6-4 win against Ferrari.

Next up for the Bulldogs will be the long-awaited completion of a suspended dual match against Providence College on Tuesday (Oct. 11) afternoon, with the Bulldogs already leading 3-1 in singles play of that contest.  Next weekend the Bulldogs will participate in the New England Championships on Sunday, Oct. 16 before rounding out the fall season with a dual match against Siena on Oct. 22.
