SMITHFIELD, RI - Home for the first time since November 13, the
Bryant University men's and women's swim teams used a strong team
effort overall to earn a pair of wins over visiting Holy Cross
Wednesday night at the Chace Athletic Center. The men
finished with a 160-99 win while the Bryant women topped the
Crusaders 157-105.
Looking to ride the momentum from a strong performance over the
weekend at the Siena Quad Meet, the Bulldogs looked right at home
winning 22 of the 28 events and saw another school and pool record
fall in the early going.
The men's team also had several outstanding performances against
the Crusaders. Sophomore Alex Kosenski (Lavallette,
N.J.) won three individual events to pace the Bulldogs
while classmate Kevin McDonald (North Haven,
Conn.) and junior Steve Nguyen (San Jose,
Calif.) each won a pair of individual events.
Kosenski's
cruised to a win in the 200 yard freestyle by a good four seconds
after touching the wall in a time of 1:50.17. He would
later add a first-place finish in both the 100 yard free (48.90)
and 500 yard free (5:10.01) and swam the final leg of the Bulldogs'
400 yard freestyle relay team that finished first in 3:24.84.
After a strong performance Sunday at Siena, Nguyen had a solid
night for the Bulldogs, swimming the first leg of the 400 free
relay while adding a win in the 1000 free (10:22.92) and 200
individual medley (2:04.78). McDonald helped the men stretch
its lead by winning the 100 backstroke (55.11) and 50 free (22.63)
but perhaps saved his best in the end with an excellent third-leg
of the 400 relay that helped the Bulldogs pull away in the final
event and to close out solid team victory.
On the women's side, freshman Molly Smith (Belmont,
Mass.) took the first of her three first-place finishes on
the evening by winning the 200 freestyle in a time of 1 minute,
59.48 seconds to set a new school record by only a fraction of a
second ahead of senior Jess Looney's (Goffstown,
N.H.) 2006 mark of 1:59.73. Smith would later
take top honors in the 100 breastroke in 1:09.20 and the 200
breaststroke in a time of 2:30.95. She also swam the
first leg of the 400 yard freestyle relay team that finished first
in 3:49.41.
The 200 medley relay squad of Casey Ostrander
(Yarmouthport, Mass.), Brianne Dwyer (Hicksville,
NY), Abby Whittaker (Salisbury, Mass.)
and Jill Squillante (Sayville, NY) opened the meet
by setting a new pool and school record with a time of
1:53.81.
Ostrander, also having an outstanding first season for the
Bulldogs, took three individual first-place finishes on the night
as the Barnstable High School graduate won the 100 yard backstroke
in 59.41, the 50 free in 25.21 and 100 yard butterfly in 1:02.02.
Freshman Kim Carballeira (East Setauket, NY)
won a pair of events (1000 free and 500 free) while Looney captured
a first-place of her own as the Bulldog senior took home the 200
yard backstroke in 2:16.99.
The Bulldogs will return to action on Saturday when they travel
to Stony Brook for a dual meet starting at 2 pm. Holy Cross will
return to action this weekend at the Worcester City Championship
this Friday and Saturday.
