SMITHFIELD, R.I. - The fifth-ranked Bryant University men's
lacrosse team shook off a slow start in the opening period and
overcame an early deficit earning a 19-7 win over visiting Saint
Anselm College before 972 at a sun-splashed Bulldog Stadium
Saturday. The win is Bryant's eighth-straight heading into
next Saturday's regular-season finale against Southern New
Hampshire.
Saint Anselm (6-6, 4-4 NE-10), riding the momentum from
Wednesday's overtime win over Southern New Hampshire, took
advantage of sloppy play by the Bulldogs in the early going.
After Bryant's Bryan Kaufmann (Putnam Valley,
NY) put the Bulldogs up 1-0 just 46 seconds into the game,
Saint Anselm's Steve Trocki made it 1-1 with the first of his three
goals on the afternoon.
Kevin Hoagland (Glastonbury, CT) would put
Bryant back in front 2-1, but the Hawks, behind the steady play of
goalie Dan Flynn (15 saves), would answer again, this time scoring
four unanswered goals to take a 5-2 lead after one quarter of
play. Mike McLain had a pair of goals during the run, but
Bryant would regroup.
A Matt McKeefrey (Melville, NY) goal to open
the second quarter started a six-goal run by the Bulldogs who
quickly regained the lead and never looked back. Bryant
(11-3, 8-1 NE-10) led 6-5 at the half, but would out-score the
Hawks 17-2 over the course of the final three quarters of the
game.
McKeefrey had a big game for the Bulldogs, scoring three goals
on the afternoon while adding three assists. Hoagland would
finish with five while Kaufmann added three goals of his own plus
picked up two more assists to add to his team-best 20 assists this
season.
Bryant out-shot the Hawks 58 to 23 and won 26 of 29 face-offs
including another solid afternoon for sophomore Andrew
Hennessey (Wading River, NY) who lost just twice,
finishing 25 for 28 in the circle.
