BRYANT WOMEN'S TENNIS CAPTURES NORTHEAT-10 REGULAR
SEASON TITLE WITH 8-1 WIN OVER BENTLEY
SMITHFIELD, RI - The Bryant University women's tennis team captured
the 2008 Northeast-10 Conference regular-season title with an 8-1
win over Bentley College Wednesday afternoon at the Bryant Tennis
Complex. The Bulldogs will wrap up the regular season Saturday
hosting Dowling College for a non-conference match at 11 a.m. The
NE-10 Conference tournament will begin next week.
On Wednesday, Bryant took the first three doubles points to open
the match and got a pair of hard-fought, come-from-behind wins in
singles play to pick up the win. Chelsea Downing (Cherry Hills,
Colorado) came back from losing the first set to 6-0 to defeat
Bentley's Kelly Fleszar (Larchmont, NY) by winning the next
two, 6-4, 6-4 at No. 2 singles.
Freshman Valeria Couto Cuervo (Guaynabo, P.R.) dropped the first
set to Andrea Hollot (Easthampton, MA), 6-1 at No. 5 singles, but
battled back to win the second, 6-2 and earned the win with a 10-8
win in the tie-breaker.
Bentley's Kelly Nugent (Lynnfield, MA) earned Bentley's lone
point with a straight-set win over Bryant's Michelle Burke
(Barrington, RI) at No. 3 singles (6-2, 6-0). The win was
Nugent's 15th-straight win in dual matches this year.
