WOMEN'S SWIMMING FALLS TO WAGNER 160-102 IN OPENER

RESULTS

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. - The Bryant University women's swim team fell to Wagner College, 160-102 Saturday afternoon on Long Island in the 2009-10 season-opener for the Bulldogs despite a strong effort from three newcomers competing in their first collegiate meet.

Bryant was led by newcomer Molly Smith (Belmont, Mass.) who took home a pair of first-place finishes on the afternoon and added a runner-up finish as well.  In the 200 yard breastroke, Smith touched the wall in a time of 2 minutes, 35:33, nearly five seconds ahead of Wagner's Patricia Gavin who finished second.  Earlier, Smith captured first-place honors in the 100 yard breaststroke in a school-record time of 1:09.76 and added a second-place finish in the 1000 yard freestyle, finishing in 11:02.31. 

Fellow freshman Casey Ostrander (Yarmouthport, Mass.) took first in the 100 yard backstroke in a time of 1:00.75 while newcomer Kim Carballeira (East Setauket, NY) was a winner in the 200 yard freestyle, finishing in 2:02.30, just ahead of teammate Jessica Looney (Goffstown, NH) who was close behind in second in 2:02.80.  Looney would also add a third-place finish in the 200 yard backstroke (2:16.89).

The Bulldogs will return home next Friday evening hosting the University of Maine in the home opener starting at 6 pm at the Chace Athletic Center Pool.
